Arlene McCan Obituary

Plymouth – Arlene Ann (Fouts) McCan, 88, passed away peacefully on Feb. 10, 2026 at Miller's Senior Living Community in Plymouth. She was born in her parents' home on Aug. 5, 1937 in Marshall County near Walkerton to Clell Durwood Fouts and Marian Marie (Compton) Fouts. On Jan. 13, 1957, she married Roger D. McCan at Teegarden, Marshall County, Indiana in the Evangelical Brethren Church. Her husband preceded her in death on April 16, 2022.
She graduated from Tyner High School as salutatorian, where she majored in business. Mary Ellen Hission was her teacher and Arlene spent every spare moment in the business department helping to type the school newsletter.
Near the end of her senior year of high school, she came home one day to find two officers of the LaPaz Farmers State Bank waiting to talk to her. They asked her to work as a receptionist, stenographer, and secretary. That was the beginning of her career in banking, loans, and finance. When she left the bank, she then worked in Plymouth abstracting Marshall County records and making agricultural and rural home mortgage loans. After the mortgage loan career, she joined 1st Source Bank in Plymouth as an Executive Secretary to the Regional President.
She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They spent their winters in Harlington, Texas and New Smyrna Beach, Florida. In 2008, Arlene traveled to Germany with the Church of the Brethren for their 300th anniversary.
Arlene became interested in genealogy mainly because she learned her great, great, great-grandfather was a Captain in the Army. She learned that White Thunder, a Sioux Indian, killed her great, great, great-grandfather at Horse Creek, Wyoming in 1865. This began her quest for books pertaining to the Plains Indian War and the description of his service to the military and his battle with the Indians. She proudly displayed a picture of Captain Fouts in her living room.
She was a member of the Plymouth Church of the Brethren, where she was a Deaconess and served as Secretary to the Church Board. She was a life member of the Friends of Timbercrest, North Manchester and a member of the Finance Committee and Women's Fellowship. She also served as Recording Secretary for the Zeta Zeta Chapter of the Delta Theta Tau National Philanthropic Sorority. When she retired, she became a member of the Zeta Zeta Beta Alumnae Chapter in Plymouth, where she served as Secretary-Treasurer for many years. She was President of the Cancer Association of Marshall County.
She often remarked that her favorite role was that of a grandmother and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Arlene is survived by her son, Donald (Sarah) McCan of Plymouth; grandchildren, Matthew David Arthur McCan of Veedersburg; Sean Michael Joseph (Megan) McCan of Lafayette; Sacchy Demair of Plymouth; great-grandchild, McKai McCan of Lafayette; along with her sister, Carolyn Kelly.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Roger; parents, Clell and Marian; and brother-in-law, Roger Kelly.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Church of the Brethren, 1130 N. Michigan Street, Plymouth, IN 46563. Funeral Services will immediately follow at 1 p.m. with Pastor Michelle Leonard officiating.
Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Plymouth.
Memorial contributions can be directed to the Plymouth Church of the Brethren, 1130 N. Michigan Street, Plymouth, IN 46563 or to Timbercrest Retirement Home, 2201 East Street, North Manchester, IN 46962.

For Arlene´s family

Arlene sent me pictures of sorority, Cancer Association, things that we did together, and I will always remember her kindness when Jerry, my husband , passed.

We had such good talks, I gave the cutting of a bush your dad gave me because I loved it so much!

No one can ever take those memories away.

I´m sorry that I cannot be there because of a surgery for cancer on my left leg! More involved than I thought.

Your families must remember the friends, the kindness, the love that was extended to so many from them.

I will be in touch a bit later!
