Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home - Paris on Mar. 3, 2026.
Arnetta Joyce Bailey passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on March 3, 2026, in
Paris, Texas. Born on May 20, 1938, in
Detroit, Texas, to Marshall and Mary Norwood, she was a woman whose life was defined by her love of cooking, decorating, and surrounding herself with family and friends. She graduated as Valedictorian of Detroit High School in 1956, an early reflection of her determination and strong character.
In May 1956, she married Herman Bailey, beginning a loving partnership that would span decades. They first made their home in Dallas before eventually settling in Kaufman, where they raised their three children. During those years, she was a dedicated mother, devoted homemaker, and loving wife, creating a warm and welcoming home that became the heart of their family.
In the early 1970s, they built a successful family-owned business, Bailey Signs, in Dallas. The company thrived well into the 1990s and became a proud accomplishment for their family.
In the mid-1970s, they relocated to Mesquite, enjoying life as empty nesters and embracing their roles as grandparents. She was the heart of her family - a devoted mother, grandmother, and later great-grandmother - who cherished holidays, birthdays, and every family gathering. Her home was always open, filled with warmth, beautiful decor, delicious meals, and joyful celebration.
In 1980, Arnetta pledged into Beta Sigma Phi in Mesquite. In 1986, she and Herman moved to
Paris, Texas to retire. In Paris, she became an active member of the Paris Women's Club, the Garden Club, and continued her pledge to the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She formed lasting friendships and found great joy in her club involvement.
In the 1990s, she fulfilled a personal dream by opening her own tearoom, Grapevines, in Athens. There, she worked alongside her daughter and granddaughter, sharing her love of cooking, decorating, and hosting. It was more than a business; it was an extension of her passion for bringing people together.
In the early 2000s, she moved to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, embracing a simpler, more relaxed season of life. She especially treasured visits from friends and family during those years.
In 2005, she returned to Paris, where she resumed her club activities and became an avid card player. She delighted in hosting and attending regular card games, always enjoying the fellowship as much as the game itself.
Throughout her life, she not only lovingly raised her own children but also welcomed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren into her home for spring breaks and summers - creating cherished memories that will last generations. She had a love of travel that took her as far as Alaska and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In later years, she especially enjoyed day trips and outings with her women's clubs.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marshall and Mary Norwood; four sisters; and one brother.
She is survived by her children: Debra Bailey of Lindale; Kenneth Bailey and wife Regina of Kaufman; Lisa Hoyt and husband Don of Blossom and sister Marsha Phifer and husband Bobby of Detroit.
Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Kristi Smith and husband Chad of Canton; Kevin Bailey and wife Brandi of Dallas; Brandon Busby and wife Jamie of Scurry; Adam Bailey of Dallas; Missi Fisher and husband Dallas of McKinney; and Taylor Hoyt of Dallas.
She was blessed with great-grandchildren: Cheyenne Henshaw and husband Tyler; Bailey and Ryder Walker; Jaxon, Conner, and Caleb Smith; Kayla Green and husband Damon McDonald; Elva Merrick; Dakota and Sophia Busby; Ethen, Micah, and Bryson Bailey; Aubrey and Allison Beig; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, and long-lasting friends who will cherish her memory.
Her life was a beautiful example of love, creativity, devotion, and friendship, and her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Funeral services have been set for Friday, March 6, 2026 at 1:00 PM at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home with Tony Jackson officiating. Visitation will be observed one hour prior to the service.
