Arthur Z. Berg, M.D, 93, of Wenham, MA, prominent North Shore psychiatrist. Dr. Berg was the founding Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Beverly Hospital and Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. He was a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Berg maintained a private practice in Beverly, MA for 40 years prior to retirement in 2004.
Dr. Berg was an early advocate for use of psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic skill in the diagnosis and treatment of medical and surgical illness. He was an original board member of the Association of General Hospital Psychiatry and highly regarded by colleagues and students as a diagnostician and clinician.
Dr. Berg served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star medal. Following the war, he attended medical school on the GI Bill. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, an appointee to the American Psychiatric Association Violence Task Panel and consultant to the F.B.I. counter-terrorism task force.
A strong Second Amendment and constitutional rights advocate, Dr. Berg participated in the Amicus Brief of Academics to the Supreme Court in the landmark case D.C. v. Heller (2008) and was a member of the academic advisory board of the Crime Prevention Research Center.
Dr. Berg was an avid sailor and a master scuba diver. Cruising with the family and sailing with his three sons was a cherished, favorite activity. He was a long-time member of the Manchester Yacht Club, the Manchester Harbor Boat Club, the Hamilton-Wenham Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by Roberta, his beloved wife of 62 years, a noted North Shore artist and horticulturalist; three devoted sons: Joshua, Aaron, and Adam, who were the pride of his life; two loving daughters-in-law: Pamela and Vita; and three adored grandchildren: Darah, Rebecca, and David.
