Arthur D. "Dewey" Dawson, 77, of Groton, passed away peacefully at his daughter's home on June 13, 2024.

He was born July 21, 1946 in Ithaca and was a lifelong county resident. He was a graduate of Ithaca High School and worked for both the Ithaca College and Cornell Safety Divisions before embarking on a 29-year career with the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office. Dewey served TCSO in a variety of roles and spent time as the Juvenile Officer and with the Junior Deputy and 4-H Bike Safety Programs. He retired as a Sergeant.

He also served part-time as a patrol officer for the Groton, Trumansburg, and Moravia Police Departments.

Dewey was immersed in the community and was a retired member of the C.W. Conger Hose Co. # 2 of the Groton Fire Department, where he was an Emergency Medical Technician with the Ambulance Service. He was a past member of the Lansing Fire Dept. and Ithaca Rescue, Steamer & Chemical Co. # 2. He was a member of Post 800 American Legion and past member of the VFW. He served as Town of Groton Justice for 24 years and was active with the Tompkins County Magistrates Association.

He is survived by his children: Crystal West (Joshua), Dewey Dawson (Alexandra), and Michelle Dawson; his grandchildren: Olivia, Allanah, Elizabeth, J.P., Zoey (Rhiannon), Lucas, Harmony, Eleanora, and Camden; a great grandchild, Connor (and a second on the way); and a large, extended family and circles of friends.

Friends may call from 3:00 - 5:00 PM on Wednesday, June 19 at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 103 Lincoln Avenue, Groton, where funeral services will follow at 5:00 PM. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
