Arthur Hashagen, Jr. Obituary
Arthur Henry Hashagen Jr. 102, peacefully passed away at his home in Dover, Delaware on November 17, 2023.
Born on March 23, 1921 in Newark, New Jersey to the late Arthur Henry & Florence Emma (Miller) Hashagen, Arthur's life began in humble conditions, spending his childhood years in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. He returned to Newark, New Jersey for his teenage years and attended the Irvington Vocational School where he began his training to become a machinist.
In 1938 Arthur joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He trained at Camp Dix before being sent to Hyrum, Utah, assigned to work at the Cache National Forest. It was during this time he developed many skills that would benefit him throughout his life.
He returned to New Jersey a year later and began his work as a tool and die machinist, later working for the Navy as part of the War effort. In 1943 he was drafted into the Army and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant.
After being discharged from the army, Arthur returned to New Jersey. In 1948 he married the late Virginia Lee Adams and they were blessed with 67 years of marriage before she passed away in 2016. Arthur was a devoted family man and he and Virginia raised a family of four children.
He never missed an opportunity to comfort, to advise, or lend a hand with any project concerning his family. He was affectionately called "Papa fix-it" as most often he could repair anything from a broken toy, a flat tire, a leaky faucet or a broken heart. Whether you knew him as Arthur, Art, Bud, Uncle Buddy, Dad, or Papa, he left an everlasting mark in your life. Although he led a life that was full of challenges and hardships, he always greeted every obstacle with a generous dose humility, creative thinking and humor. His was and is an incredible inspiration to those who were blessed to know him.
Arthur was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Virginia, his sister, Lillian Lola Bozzay, his niece, Candace Jackovino and his special canine companion, Dolce.
He is survived by his children; Leigh (Paul) Miller, Hamilton, NJ, Carl (Heidi) Hashagen, Green Lane, PA, Jill Woschenko, Dover, DE, & Ethan (Barbara) Hashagen, Belvidere, NJ, his grandchildren; Justin Clark, Jesse (Elizabeth) Hashagen, Evan (Alyssa) Clark, Hannah (Aaron Hafitz) Clark, Carlee (Jason) Dietterick, Dylan Woschenko & Seth Miller, seven great-grandchildren, his nieces, Lois Ann DiDolce and Linda Klebaur and their families.
A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Arthur's memory at the Wild Meadow's Club House at 529 Weaver Dr., Dover DE, Saturday December 2, from noon to 4 p.m.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date, with interment at the Ewing Church Cemetery, Ewing, NJ
Memorial contributions may be made to the Civilian Conservation Corps Legacy at CCC Legacy, PO Box 342, Edinburg, VA 22824 or at www.ccclegacy.org
