Arthur "Art" Ohmer Obituary

Mr. Arthur James Ohmer, known to most as "Art," 84, of Savannah, died Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Azalealand Nursing Home. He was born July 8, 1941, in West Palm Beach, Florida, to the late James Clarence Ohmer and Hazel Burrus Ohmer.

Art proudly served in the United States Army for more than seven years. During the Vietnam War, he flew helicopter missions in Huey and Cobra aircraft and also served as a fixed-wing pilot and aerial photographer.

Art spent most of his life in Savannah, where his entrepreneurial spirit led him to own and operate several local businesses, including Arturo's Sub Pub, Penguin Photo, and Gilligan's Beverage Center on Wilmington Island, which he opened almost 40 years ago. From a young age through his late teens, Art was a dedicated swimmer and a state champion while living in Florida. He remained connected to aviation throughout his life as a member of the Civil Air Patrol, served as Jimmy Carter's private pilot during his campaign for governor, and was a member of the Quiet Birdmen.

In his spare time, Art enjoyed fishing, hunting, and quiet moments at home. What he loved most, however, was time spent with family, friends, and his cat, Kitty Kitty Meow Meow. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Redifer.

He is survived by Brenda Morey of Rincon, the love of his life for twenty years; his daughter, Lauren Ohmer of Savannah; his son, Christopher Ohmer of Savannah; and one grandson, Arturo, affectionately known to Art as "R2."

A celebration of Art's life will be held on Friday morning, December 19, 2025 at 11:00 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors Islands Chapel, 4605 US Highway 80 East, Savannah, GA 31410. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens with military honors.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice.

Arthur James "Butterfly Butterfly" Ohmer
1941-2025

I was sad to hear that Art passed. Heck, I can only hope that he is up there fishing in that big ocean in the sky-probably with my father, Captain Helmey. I like to believe they´re both surrounded by lots of very good company.

I loved going to the Gilligan Package Store, and the number one reason was that Art was there. You almost always saw someone you knew, and the conversations we had-well, let´s just say I´ll save those for another story.

When you made a purchase back then, it was usually cash, and you´d likely get some change. In that change was often a fresh, brand-new, sticking-together two-dollar bill.

Now here´s where it gets interesting. Back in the good old days, some folks didn´t want others to know they´d been shopping at Art´s package store. So after your visit, if you didn´t want anyone to know, you´d better move that brand-new two-dollar bill to another pocket. I can´t tell you how many times I pulled money out to pay for something and someone watching would say, "I know where you´ve been!"

When you run a business like Art´s, you learn-and hear-a lot. I´ll never forget one time when a group of us decided to take a little sabbatical from over-tasting the drink. I ran into Art, and he asked if everyone was okay. I told him yes, that a few of us were taking a little sabbatical. Art replied, "Well, sales have dropped drastically, and I might have to take Chris out of private school!" We both laughed. It truly was fun-and it meant we all badly needed that sabbatical.

Most people knew Arthur James Ohmer as Art. However, after chartering my boat and spending a day with us on the ocean, he became famously known as "BUTTERFLY BUTTERFLY!" by all of us at Miss Judy Charters-and now I´ll tell you why.

While fishing that day, a yellow butterfly kept flying around the boat. Art asked, "What the heck is a yellow butterfly doing 40 miles offshore?" I replied, "Well, it seems the butterflies and the king mackerel migrate at the same time of year."

This phenomenon usually happens in early fall. When we start seeing yellow butterflies, it means the king mackerel have arrived. After hearing this, Art laid back down to finish his midday nap. After all, fishing can make you tired... or maybe not!

Art wasn´t sleeping-he was watching yellow butterflies. Suddenly he called out, "BUTTERFLY! BUTTERFLY!" And from that moment on, he was no longer Art to us-he was Butterfly Butterfly.

I want to extend my sincere condolences to Chris and his family. And to Butterfly Butterfly-you were truly loved and will be deeply missed by many.

Thanks, Captain Judy Helmey and the older fishing gang! Savannah, Ga
