Arthur Irving Rice III, 57, beloved husband of Shirley Rice, passed away on February 15, 2026. Born on December 1, 1968, in New Haven, he was the son of Priscilla and the late Arthur I. Rice, Jr. He graduated from Ansonia High School in 1987.
Arthur, lovingly known as "#10," defied every odd placed before him and inspiring all who knew his story. On Columbus Day in 2013, Arthur was diagnosed with stage four glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, and given only two years to live at most. The prognosis was grim, since only one out of ten patients live past 5 years. True to his spirit, Arthur chose to be that one. He beat cancer, surpassed every expectation, and was blessed with 13 more years of life, love, and memories with those he cherished most. Arthur faced every obstacle with bravery, resilience, and an unshakable spirit. He marked not only his 10-year milestone of recovery but also celebrated his 30th wedding anniversary with his devoted wife, Shirley- moments once thought impossible, now treasured beyond measure.
Arthur's motto was "I do as I please !!" He lived without fear. Though very tall in stature, he was a true gentle giant; he was known for his kindness, generosity, and ability to talk to anyone. His strength was matched only by his quiet confidence and tenderness toward those he loved.
Deeply patriotic, Arthur had a profound love for his country and rarely missed an evening watching Fox News. He found peace and purpose outdoors- hiking with his loyal dog, Buddy, biking, and taking on hard labor with determination and pride. He enjoyed cooking meals, World War II documentaries, classic sitcoms, and hard rock music. He especially loved Ozzy Osbourne and admired the freedom and spirit of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Arthur's ultimate dream was to own one, which symbolizes the open road and independence he valued so deeply.
Above all, Arthur cherished his family. They remain forever grateful for the extra 13 years they were given, filled with laughter, milestones, strength, and unwavering love. Though their hearts are heavy, they find comfort knowing he is finally at peace.
Along with his loving wife, Shirley, Arthur is survived by his mother, Priscilla Rice; his sister, Christine (Lee) Bossio, his nephew Chance, and many cousins. Along with his father, Arthur Rice Jr., he is predeceased by his beloved furry companions, Rusty, Buddy, and Abby.
Friends and family are invited to gather from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, Milford.
