Arthur Shelton was born June 30, 1943, to Chester Arthur Shelton and Rosie Lee Shelton in Macon, Mississippi.
He received his education in the school districts of East St. Louis, Illinois, and Kansas City, Missouri.
Arthur worked for Jack Cooper Trucking Company before relocating to Los Angeles, CA. Upon returning to Kansas City, MO, he became a concert promoter, bringing in acts such as the Bloodstones and Dramatics and many other performers to popular clubs, the Municipal Auditorium, and the Music Hall. Eventually he went to school for auto-mechanics and opened and operated several auto mechanic shops. Known for his generosity, he often gave the shirt off his back and his last dime to help family and friends. He never hesitated to assist anyone in need. He accepted the Lord and was baptized.
He consistently displayed a cheerful demeanor, maintaining a smile even during times when it didn't come naturally. He loved his family and friends and anyone who met "Big Art" or "Art", as he was affectionately known by, immediately felt like family. He valued uniting his family and friends and became famous for his yearly gatherings that combined his birthday celebrations with Independence Day festivities, all made possible with the steadfast assistance of his cousin Bobby Loveless, who stood by him over the years.
Arthur, passed away on July 8, 2024, at St. Luke's Hospice House.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Ethel "Peaches" Jackson, Opra Shelton Morgan, Celia Shelton, Essie Shelton, and Janice Shelton; and one brother, Elvin "Baby Joe" Shelton. He is survived by his daughter, Michelle Shelton; three nephews who were like sons to him, Darnell Shelton, Renauld Shelton, and Robert Shelton; his Godson, Bradley Reeder; four brothers, Edward Shelton, Monroe McKinney, Darrick Shelton, and Ronald Roland; his best friend, James Gadson; two grandsons, two granddaughters, ten great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024, 3pm at the Watkins Heritage Chapel. Private Disposition. Visitation from 2pm-3pm at the chapel. Services conducted by Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapel. Condolence may be shared on our website.
