Ashok B. Desai, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and a distinguished aerospace engineer, passed away on January 10, 2026, in Columbia, Maryland. He was born on December 31, 1942, in India, and has left behind a legacy of love, intellect, and a profound dedication to his work and family.
For his professional career, Ashok dedicated many years as an aerospace engineer at NASA, beginning in 1989 and culminating with his retirement in 2023. His innovative contributions to the field were deeply respected by colleagues and peers alike. Beyond his professional endeavors, Ashok was a man of varied passions; he loved traveling, immersing himself in art, music, and photography. A philosopher at heart, he often engaged in deep discussions regarding contemporary issues within the university setting, showcasing his love for knowledge and critical thinking.
Ashok was particularly fond of visiting temples, where he admired the intricate carvings and architectural designs. His gentle nature and kind spirit shone through in his interactions with everyone he met, reflecting his desire for the best for the world and its people. Ashok enjoyed sharing a nice glass of wine and scotch with his family, cherishing those moments spent together.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Bhadra Desai, with whom he shared 53 wonderful years of marriage. Ashok is also survived by his daughter and two sons: Anura Desai, Mihir Desai, who is married to Amee, and Urnav Desai, who is married to Sarah. He took immense joy in his role as a grandfather to Arjun and Krish Desai, who brought him great happiness. Additionally, he is survived by his cousin, Arun Desai.
Ashok was preceded in death by his father, Balwantrai Desai, and his mother, Kusum. His influence and loving presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A. in Odenton, Maryland, on January 14, 2026, starting at 11:00 AM and concluding at 1:00 PM. Family and friends are invited to come together to honor and remember a truly remarkable individual.
