Astrit Lulushi, aged 70, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, in Woodbridge, Virginia. Born October 8,1953 in Tirana, Albania, he later married his wife Iliriana, and they had two children. Years later in 1985, Astrit bravely escaped communist Albania and made his way to America where he began a new life and later aided his family's immigration.
Astrit held a distinguished 30-year career at Voice of America as a journalist working in the roles of writer, producer, translator and speaker.
Astrit was an accomplished writer and authored 17 books, countless other writings, poems and reflections. He was known by those close to him as a man of few words, but with the mind of a philosopher and the soul of a poet. A man of another time, a quiet intellectual who never stopped writing. He was presented numerous awards from his time with Voice of America and was recognized by the international literary world.
He is survived by wife, Iliriana Lulushi, daughter, Romina Lulushi MacNeill her husband David MacNeill and grandson, London Porter. He is also survived by brothers, Jaho, Eduart (Nadi) Gezim (Diana), Albert (Enit) and sister Liliana - along with 3 nephews, 4 nieces and many extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his son, Steven Lulushi.
Crumbs of dreams
I don't know where the day
is born and where the evening dies.
Fill the sky with tears and words
like the sea that goes and then returns
I close my eyes when
the wind caresses me with your hands
I kiss your caress and embrace your pain. -Astrit Lulushi
