On April 3rd, 2025, Athel Eugene Brown, at the age of 90, traded in his much-loved, well-worn, mortal body toward delivery of a brand new, custom-designed, incorruptible model. He is scheduled to take delivery of his glorious new body when that trump sounds on Resurrection Day.

He made the deal with Jesus, way back in 1978, when he accepted the free gift, He offered to all mankind. The contract stated that in exchange for Athel believing His promises (Acts 16:31), Jesus would not only provide him with a Heavenly, new body, but He would also assume Athel’s debts for all time. Jesus sealed the contract with His own precious blood.

Athel is currently hanging out with Jesus in the Heavenly waiting area. He’s likely trying to get some tips from the greatest fisherman and carpenter of all-time.

Athel is survived by his sweetheart of 62-years, Darlene (Lafavers) Brown. Additional survivors include one son, Rodney (Gail) Brown, and three daughters, Cherrie (Brad) Riddle, Robin (Josh) Meaney, and Julie (Todd) Eimen, 13 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, one sister, Carol (Doug) Osborne, and a host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Okle and Floretta (Flora) Brown, four brothers- William, Raymond (Lonnie), Cecil, and Buel, one grandson, Loren “Tyler” Riddle, and one great-grandson, Asher Weinbrecht. His last days were spent surrounded by his loving wife, adoring children, and grandchildren.

Athel was born in Jabez, Kentucky on August 20, 1934. He moved to Indianapolis with his family as a teenager. He served in the US Army. In 1962, he met and married the love of his life, Darlene (Lafavers) just 2-½ months after meeting. He worked for Bryant Heating and Air for 33-years.

Athel enjoyed a good argument. He loved to fuss and tease with those he loved. He loved telling stories about his childhood “down home” and all the cool cars he bought over the years. His interests included haggling with car salesmen for the best deals (great entertainment), fishing, boating, camping, watching western movies, listening to Bluegrass music and the old hymns. He took pleasure in challenging the young bucks to games of Mercy, which he dominated.

He lovingly cared for and doted on his bride as they grew older and wiser. Their love and faith took on deeper meaning and layers as they cared for one another and faced many challenges together. He passed from this world while his favorite hymn that his mother sang to him as a boy was sung, “In the Sweet By and By”.

He will be sorely missed by all who love him. We will see you later on that beautiful shore.

Visitation will take place on Monday, April 7th, 2025, from 11:00-1:00 at Corinth Church, 6590 E Co Rd 1000 N, Brownsburg, IN.

The funeral service will follow at 1:00. It will be officiated by Reverends Jimmy Polston and Kevin Wilson. Entombment will follow the funeral at Washington Park East Cemetery located at 10612 E Washington Street, Indianapolis.
