Audrey Marie Sherman Butts was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the third child of the late Willard and Bennie Lee Sherman of Eufaula, Alabama. Her siblings: Willard Jr. (Delores), Byron (Doris), Lilla (Harold-dec.), and LeCarter (Vivian) all preceded her in death, survived by their spouses.
At the age of 12, after the passing of her father, she moved to Toledo, Ohio. Later she returned to Eufaula for high school. While in Eufaula she met and married her former husband, Abbpetty Johnson. To this union was born a daughter, Verna. In addition to her responsibilities as a mother, she wanted a college education. She attended Clark College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in education.
Audrey began her 35-year career as an elementary school teacher in Crawfordville, Georgia. She worked for a few other schools in Georgia, working her way to the Atlanta Public School System. Her longest tenure was at Adamsville Elementary School, where she touched the lives of many students who lived in the area and remember her fondly. She was very active in several professional organizations during her career, including The Atlanta Association of Educators (AAE), where she served as president.
She married her former husband Joseph Butts, the brother of her best college friend, later giving birth to her son, Joseph Ricardo "Rick" Butts.
A good and faithful servant, Audrey was a proud member of Cascade United Methodist Church where she was a member of The Torch Bearers and served as a Communion Steward. She was a true and loyal friend, always willing to lend an ear or a helping hand when needed. She loved to read, listen to gospel and jazz music, and travel. Above all else, she was always available to aid her family and loved ones.
She leaves to mourn her passing: Verna (Melvin) Bolton and Joseph "Rick" Butts Sr., grandsons, Jeremy (Traci) Bolton Sr., Jarrett (Qiana) Bolton, Joseph R. Butts Jr., and DeAndre Butts, a granddaughter, Jasmine Butts, great grandsons, Jeremy 'J.J.' Bolton Jr., Kacey Bolton, and Jackson Bolton, great granddaughters, Jermya Bolton, Kyrah Shabazz, Malani Wilkins and Khloe Bolton, a special nephew Harold Franklin Jr., a host of nieces, nephews, and friends, a care giver, Elsie Evans-Daniels, and a loving and faithful friend, Gloria Stanley.
