August R. Simpson, age 100, of Bloomingdale, NY, died on Monday January 12, 2026 at Elderwood of Uihlein surrounded by his loving family.
"Augie" was born on June 8, 1925, in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Mayroe D. Simpson and Bertha (Brickman) Simpson. He married Ilean Tuthill (Royal and Irene Tuthill of Suguarbush, NY) on October 2, 1954.
He graduated from Bloomingdale Union High School as Valedictorian in 1943. He worked for the Rochester Products Division of GMC until joining the U. S. Army Air Corps in 1944. He served for 31 months; 23 overseas. He was discharged in September 1946 as a Sargent. After leaving the military he went to work with his father operating the Mobil Service Station at the 4-corners in Bloomingdale, where the Four-Corners Restaurant is now located. In 1954 he sold the business and went to work for Paul Smith's Electric Power Company, and eventually Niagara Mohawk Power Company, retiring after 31 years in 1985. He also worked for Everieth Construction Co., and was instrumental in the construction of the Senior Citizens Overlook Apartments in Bloomingdale, and was responsible for maintenance of that complex until 2005. He also was the "keeper of the clocks" in the Bloomingdale Town Hall for many years.
Augie was a member of the Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years, serving as Chief in 1964-65. He was a member of the Amvets and a charter member of Bloomingdale Over 55-er's Club. He enjoyed playing softball, fishing, reading and loved jigsaw puzzles. He also liked his yard full of flowers, and decorating his home at Halloween and Christmas.
He is survived by one son, Kenneth R. Simpson and his wife, Ann (Marks), and a daughter, Angela Penny and her husband, Daniel, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, three brothers; Edward, William and Charles, three sisters; Ellen Hayes, Dorothy White, and Bertha Dyer. Ilean, his beloved wife of 60 years, passed in 2015. Shirley Bruce of Saranac, NY was Augie’s faithful companion for 10 years.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A mass of Christian Burial is tentatively being planned for Monday June 8, 2026 at Church of the Assumption in Gabriels. Burial will follow in Paul's Cemetery in Bloomingdale.
