August Sprow Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, Sandusky Chapel on Oct. 1, 2025.
August "Gus" William Sprow, Jr., 74, of Norwalk, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on June 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on October 18, 1950, in Sandusky, Gus was a beacon of kindness and humor throughout his 74 years, touching the lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Gus graduated from Perkins High School and went on to attend Dartmouth College, enriching his mind. He proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy. Following his military service, Gus held jobs in manufacturing and ultimately retired as a security guard.
He was an avid golfer and bowler in his earlier years, finding joy and friendship on the greens and lanes. His love for reading kept his mind sharp and his conversations rich. Gus's affection for his cats was well-known, as they were his cherished companions through many of life's moments. Above all, Gus loved to spend time with his family, who were the cornerstone of his world.
He is survived by his children, Chuck (Janet) Sprow, of Sandusky, Shae (Russell) Tegeder, of Lorain, and Karli Ried, of Vermilion; siblings, Susan Sprow Meyers and Dinah Sprow Johnson (Terry Welfle); grandchildren, Vanessa, Hannah, Grace, Mike, Luke, Allison, and Alec; along with several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Gus's former wife and continued friend, Linda Sprow, remembers him fondly for the shared memories and enduring friendship they maintained.
He was preceded in death by his parents, August Sprow, Sr. and Jean Sprow (Ted Wood); sister, Elsie Louise Daisy Sprow; and grandson, Anthony William Rocca.
A private graveside service will take place in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky, Rev. Wendy Schindler-Chasney presiding.
Those wishing to contribute to August's memory may do so to One's local humane society. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, is handling arrangements. Condolences may be shared online at toftfuneralhome.com.
