With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Augustine Webb Twyman, who went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at UVA Prince William Hospital in Manassas, Virginia. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to James and Eliza Webb, Augustine was the cherished older sister of James Jr. and Mark.
A Navy brat, she had the privilege of living in many places throughout her father's career, giving her a broader understanding of the world. Her professional journey began in California, where she served as a Public Relations Director and later as a Development Director, managing a radio station. She eventually became a consultant in Washington, D.C., allowing her to travel and meet people from diverse walks of life.
Throughout her life, Augustine was guided by a deep passion for education. After earning her teaching credentials from Howard University in 1970 and later completing a master's degree in education from Georgia State University, she dedicated herself to teaching. As a beloved English teacher at Annandale High School in Virginia, she inspired her students and fought to diversify the curriculum with contemporary and world literature. Augustine's work was deeply respected, and she served as Department Chair until her retirement in 2011. Her legacy as an educator is etched in the hearts of all who had the privilege of learning from her.
Ever devoted to her faith, Augustine was an active member of First Baptist Church of Vienna for over thirty years. She faithfully served in numerous roles, including Deaconess, Trustee, Chair of the Women's Ministry, and Sunday School teacher. Her love ofliterature, her passion for art, and her zest for travel filled her life with joy, but it was her deep devotion to family, friends, and her church that truly defined her.
Augustine is survived by her husband, Thomas E. Twyman, Sr.; two brothers; a niece and nephew; her two granddaughters and grandson; and numerous stepchildren and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Alec Dempsey, and her cherished fur baby, Harvey. While we mourn her loss, we celebrate her remarkable life of faith, love, and service to others.
Visitation will be held at 10:00am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00am on Monday December 15, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Vienna, 450 Orchard Street NW, Vienna, Virginia. Interment will be held at Stonewall Memory Gardens in Manassas, Virginia.
