I was saddened to learn of Avrom's death. As a former student, I, of course, enjoyed and benefited from Avrom's teaching, but I enjoyed even more phone calls and visits, first with him and Sophia and then with him alone as he set himself up to enjoy NYC once again and later Maine. Over the years we shared many lively conversations about literature, politics, Christian theology and his own writing, and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the week he spent with us here in LA a number of years ago.
I was recently rereading Yeat's "Sailing to Byzantium" and thought of Avrom when I read, "An aged man is but a paltry thing, a tattered coat upon a stick, unless Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing for every tatter in its mortal dress." Tom and I admired the way he sang on in his poetry and prose. In our minds, he continues to sing.

We will miss him. We trust you and Franz have many wonderful memories as well as his writings to keep him present with you.
With deepest sympathy,
Heather & Tom Callow
