Prayer Services for Mr. Baljit Singh Sarai, 73, of West Monroe, LA, will be 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M., Saturday, January 20, 2024, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe.
Baljit Singh Sarai, a beloved patriarch and a leader of the West Monroe Sikh community, passed away on January 18, 2024.
Born in Punjab, India, Mr. Sarai brought the richness of his heritage to the shores of America, where he embarked on an extraordinary life journey.
In his early adult years, Mr. Sarai began his American dream in New York City as a taxi driver. With a heart full of hope and a mind rich with dreams, he later moved his family to West Monroe, Louisiana, where began an extraordinary career as an owner of gas stations and convenience stores, a true testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and hard work.
Mr. Sarai was not just a successful businessman; he was a beacon of hope and support for many. He was instrumental in bringing numerous family members and friends from India to America. His generosity knew no bounds, as he tirelessly helped them start their new lives and build a home away from home. His actions spoke of his deep belief in community and prosperity for all.
His loss is deeply felt by his family, friends, and the community he so lovingly created. Mr. Sarai’s guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support have shaped the lives of many. He led by example, teaching the values of hard work, perseverance, and the importance of preserving one’s culture. His rich legacy will continue to inspire and guide the community he has left behind.
Mr. Sarai was predeceased by his parents, Bakshish Sarai and Gurdeep Sarai; sister, Dalbir Aulakh; and brother, Baldev Sarai.
Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Satwant Kaur Sarai; two sons, Harvinder Singh Sarai (Narinder) and Wishkaranjit “Vic” Singh Sarai (Kristina); brother, Col. Dr. Didar Singh Sarai, U.S. Army (Ret.) (Preet); sister, Kamaljeet Randhawa (Surjeet); grandchildren, Shivkaran “Sunny” Sarai and Armann Sarai; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the numerous medical professionals, providers, and caregivers for their extraordinary care and kindness they provided Baljit Sarai.
