Barbara A Bates – longtime resident of Virginia Beach, VA passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. She was born November 10, 1938.

She served at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center as a Life Line Coordinator for several years. Helping others was a true passion for her.

She is preceded in death by her husband for 60 years, George E. Bates and son, Scott A Bates.

Surviving are her two sons, Edward Bates and Stephen Bates (Becky), daughter Lori Mangan and son-in-law, Scott Mangan. Five grandchildren, Calvin Bates, Hunter Bates (Christine), Nichole Speckine, Scott Bates, Jr., and Zachary Bates; three great-grandchildren, Harper Bates, Henry Bates, and Scott Bates, III; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Bates and Beatrice Bates, and several nieces and nephews.

She was a devout Christian and longtime member of the Woodland Heights Baptist Church in Chesapeake, VA.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home and Crematory located at 929 Battlefield Blvd. S. Chesapeake, VA 23322.

The funeral service will take place on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at 1:30 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 929 Battlefield Blvd. S., Chesapeake, VA 23322. Following the funeral service, Barbara will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery, located at 6329 E Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23502.
