Barbara Jean Harris Book, 85, of Lewisburg, passed away on May 5, 2025, after fighting a brief illness.
She was born on September 19, 1939, in Johnstown, PA, a daughter of the late Joseph Samuel and Leona Mae (Lee) Harris.
She spent her formative years in the orphanage at the Gamber House on the now-Riverwoods campus, where she played the saxophone. In high school, she worked at Bennett's Drug Store.
She graduated from Lewisburg High School in 1959. She married her husband James E. Book on June 20, 1959.
She raised four children with James before working at the Lyons Shop until 1981 and then in the Union County Commissioners' Office until her retirement in 2012.
She was a friend to everyone she met and a great hugger. She loved to dance and especially loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, with whom she was affectionately known as "T."
Halloween was her favorite holiday; she liked listening to Elvis and Johnny Cash.
In recent years, she made crocheted afghans, which she distributed to family and friends.
She is survived by her four children, Barbie, Debbie, James, and Dale, and their respective spouses. She also has six grandchildren, Jonathan, Jenni, Katie, Erik, Brandon, and Heather, and five great-grandchildren, Logen, Madison, Tommy, Charity, and Grayson.
Her husband, James, and three grandchildren, Johnny, Charity, and Desiree, preceded her in death.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 10 to 11 am on Friday, May 9, 2025, at Saint Peter’s United Church of Christ (Twin Churches), Lewisburg. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m., with the Reverend Jeff Hauck officiating.
Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
