Barbara Campbell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 28, 2025.
Barbara Cox Campbell passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at The Cascades, Greenville, SC. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Leona (Dietrich) Cox.

Born in 1925, the daughter of a prominent Westinghouse electrical engineer, she was born and grew up in Forest Hills, Pennsylvania. While attending Randolph Macon Woman's College she met and later married James West Campbell of Lynchburg, Virginia. They had three children. Not one to stay at home once her youngest had started elementary school, she went back to school and earned a Masters Degree in Elementary Education and an Education Specialist Degree in Supervision and Administration. She taught fourth grade at Christ Church Episcopal school for eight years before leaving to become an elementary school principal for 22 years. She served as principal at Donaldson Elementary School, Blythe Elementary School, and Mitchell Road Elementary School where she was the principal for 16 years.

After her husband passed away, she moved to Seabrook Island, where she lived for 32 years. There she was active in her church, Johns Island Presbyterian Church, and the Exchange Club of Kiawah Seabrook. She served on the boards and as an officer in the Seabrook Island Natural History Group and the Seabrook Garden Club. She filled her years with her love of music, gardening, and travel. An accomplished pianist in her youth, she was an avid supporter of Chamber Music Charleston, the Charleston Symphony, and Spoleto. She enjoyed many trips to both Eastern and Western Europe, as well as trips to South America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, and Russia. A fearless traveler, she once sent a picture of herself astride a camel near the pyramids of Egypt taken during the Arab Spring. She lived life on her own terms.

Surviving are her son, James Bradley Campbell (Cathy); five grandchildren, Mary Elise Markham Brooks (Jason), Dr. William Bradley Campbell (Holly), James Bradley Campbell, Jr.; John Calvin Markham IV (Claudia); Carolyn Anne Campbell Stratos (Milt) and ten great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James West Campbell; a son, Dr. William Cox Campbell (Joanne); daughter, Cynthia Lee Markham (Dr. John Markham); and sister, Virginia Cox Klein.

A memorial service will be held at John's Island Presbyterian Church on September 27, 2025 at 2 p.m. with visitation immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to John's Island Presbyterian Church, 2550 Bohicket Road, Johns Island, SC 29455.
