Barbara Joan Dempsey Cartwright
Wednesday, August 23, 1944 – Tuesday, November 19, 2024
Barbara Joan Dempsey Cartwright, or affectionately known as Mama Joan, of McRae, Georgia, passed away on November 19, 2024 at Atrium Health Navicent after a brief illness. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, her life exemplified her faithfulness to Christ and her love of family.
A creative soul, she was able to find beauty all around her. Whether it was her kindness to a stranger, or taking scraps of fabric to create an elegant work of art, she brought light, color, and laughter to many people. Along with her husband, Tommy, she raised four children to know and love the Lord. Spending years teaching Sunday School at her church, she passed on her faith, knowledge, and wisdom to those around her. She was an avid Bible study student and loved sharing her treasures of spiritual truths she gleaned from the scriptures.
Her beautiful singing and piano skills always created a home atmosphere with an appreciation for the arts. Whether singing Bill Gaither hymns, Alan Jackson melodies or taking her kids on field trips to Atlanta, she promoted an environment rich with artistry.
Never one to accept defeat, she was an advocate and fighter for those she loved. When life appeared to stack the odds against her family, she was able to uplift and empower those that needed it most. This attribute was especially beneficial as, along with her husband, she worked through obstacles to help give her four children a college education. This was one of her most gratifying achievements.
Walking side by side with her husband of 60 years, she helped establish and build their family farm, teaching her children and family friends life skills such as cooking, sewing, and caring for the farm animals. The consummate homemaker, she was repurposing furniture and fabrics to create a unique and stylish home. Part of her talent was used to draft and create numerous floor plans, homes they would build together. Most noticeable was her deep affection for her grandchildren. She made continual strides to teach them family traditions such as making blueberry crunch, canning sweet pickles, and memorizing scriptures. Although she will be sadly missed, Mama Joan is whole and walking the streets of heaven with her Lord.
Please join us in honoring Mama Joan with visitation at Lowes Funeral Home, Friday, November 22, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 PM. Her Celebration of Life will be Saturday, November 23 at 1:00 PM at Lowes Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Blake Jones officiating, assisted by Pastor Justin Atchison and Pastor Jay Moore. Interment will follow at Turnpike Creek Cemetery.
Mrs. Cartwright is survived by her best friend and husband, Tommy Cartwright; her children, Cathy (Tim) Goddard of Newnan, Georgia, Michael (Tammi) Cartwright of Hahira, Georgia, Julie (Craig) Hunt of Highland Village, Texas, and David (Emily) Cartwright of McRae, Georgia; grandchildren, Amy Goddard, John Goddard, Michael Cartwright Jr, Peter Cartwright, Rebeka Cartwright, Mackenzie Hunt, Madelyn Cartwright, Jackson Cartwright, and Nora Cartwright.
