Barbara Gary Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John M. Ireland & Son Funeral Home and Chapel on Aug. 1, 2024.
On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, Barbara Gary of Midwest City, Oklahoma, was called Home to Heaven at the age of 80. She was born Barbara Sue Duncan in Benton, Illinois, on November 15, 1943, to Lee Roy Duncan and Amy Lucille (Knauss) Duncan, both of whom have preceded her in death. Barbara is also preceded by her spouse, Frank Clayton, and one granddaughter, Peyton Elaine.
She leaves seven children to treasure her memory – Flint Jason Gary and wife Jennifer, Heather Colleen Gary, Amy Wyleese Cowns and husband Randy, Aaron Michael Gary and wife Ingalore, Mellissa Dawn Martinez and husband John, Jonathan Neil Gary and wife Jamie, and Greta Irene Burk and husband David; as well as her brother, Charles Duncan, more than 60 grandchildren, and last but not least, her beloved chi-weenie, Chester.
Those closest to Barbara describe her as the "nicest person you'd ever meet". From the time she was quite young, her faith was an integral part of her life. She was a longtime member of Windwood Freewill Baptist, where she acted as Treasurer, taught Vacation Bible School, and where she was revered for holding her "famous bean dinners". Barbara adored being such an essential part of her church family and loved helping out in any way she could.
After her husband Frank passed away, she began a career at Oklahoma's News Channel 4 as a Custodian. Recognizing her intelligence and tenacity, the management team at KFOR eventually offered Barbara a receptionist position, which she happily accepted. She went on to thrive in her career, thoroughly enjoying her work until her retirement. In her free time, she was a voracious reader of romance novels, and she loved working puzzles. Barbara also spent much of her time visiting antique and thrift stores, looking for that next great treasure.
While many things in life brought Barbara joy, nothing made her happier than being with the people she loved the most – her beloved family. She was so proud to come from a big family and was always happiest when she was surrounded by the people she loved. She especially loved to cook for her family and made an awesome pumpkin roll.
As we honor the life of Barbara Sue Gary, let us remember her for her kindness, her numerous accomplishments in life, and most of all, for the unconditional love she so freely shared with the people in her life. As we say our goodbyes, let us find comfort knowing that Barbara is just beginning her next great eternal adventure in Heaven, in the loving presence of our Lord and Savior. She will be deeply missed.

Barbara was one of the nicest, sweetest, caring person I've ever met. She always had a smile and a kind word to say. She will indeed be missed by everyone.

Barbara was in the hospital after her heart attack and several of us from Windwood FWB Church went to visit. When Barbara looked around at all the faces, she stopped and looked at me and said, "Do I know you?" We all laughed and I told her no, that I was visiting the church to find a permanent church family. So, I decided to visit one of the members while they were ill. When Barbara finally came back to church I sat by her and from then on we were best friends and we always sat together for the next 18 years. I love you and I miss you.
