Barbara Halperin Obituary

With Bobbie Halperin's death on August 28, 2025, Ellensburg lost a well-known and appreciated artist. Her mural gracing the entrance to the Hal Holmes Center is familiar to every resident of our community. Patients visiting KVH's Medical Center can also enjoy her paintings among its first-floor art collection.

Born Barbara Scott on January 18, 1942, Bobbie grew up in New York City, where she briefly attended both Queens College and the Pratt Institute before moving to Washington University in St. Louis where she earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts. Afterward she pursued graduate work at the University of Iowa where she met her husband Mark. He brought her to Ellensburg in 1966, and they welcomed a son, Noah, in 1973. Together they visited and lived in Mexico, Japan, Italy and St. Petersburg, trips that informed Bobbie's art. After Mark's death in summer 2018, she continued her career as an independent painter.

Over more than sixty years, she exhibited her paintings in Ellensburg, the Pacific Northwest and as far afield as New York, Massachusetts and Louisiana. She also shared her artistic enthusiasm and skill in classes for students in local elementary and middle schools. Her work decorates the walls of several Ellensburg residents. Toward the end of her career, Bobbie deviated from her previous direct style of collage and experimented with digital painting that she both exhibited and sold. In 2024, she moved to Arkansas to be close to her son and his family. As part of that transition, she decided to consign a large part of her remaining work to the Ellensburg community, including Central Washington University. The proceeds of her last exhibitions were donated to Gallery One and the Clymer Museum.

Bobbie's family plans to hold a memorial to her life next spring.
