Darius Jimmy Unwala, M.D., age 50, passed away on December 28, 2025, in Cleveland, Ohio, after a courageous battle with kidney cancer. He was born on October 13, 1975, in Nassau, The Bahamas, to Stephanie and Jimmy Unwala.
Darius began his education at Queen's College in Nassau before completing his A Levels at Haileybury and Imperial Service College in Hertfordshire, England. He went on to earn his medical degree with Honors from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. Following his graduation, he trained as a House Officer in Surgery in the U.K. and completed a General Surgery internship at Syracuse University in New York. Dr. Unwala then completed a Urology Residency at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Unwala began his professional career at the Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin, where he became board-certified in both the United States and Canada in addition to being a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, he returned home to The Bahamas to practice Urology, where he made lasting contributions to the nation's healthcare system. His innovation and dedication earned him a Bahamian Icon Award and inclusion among The Bahamas' Top 40 Under 40 for his advances in surgical care and commitment to public service.
In the later years of his career, Dr. Unwala joined the renowned Cleveland Clinic, where he was highly respected for his breadth of surgical skill and unwavering advocacy for his patients. Outside of his professional achievements, he served as a board member of The Bahamas Cancer Society and The Brighter Bahamas Foundation, reflecting his passion for improving lives beyond medicine.
In addition to his dedication to his surgical career, Dr. Unwala was an accomplished trumpet player and a dedicated athlete. As a second-degree black belt in taekwondo, he proudly represented the United States as a member of the 2024-2025 AAU National Team in Taekwondo Forms. He loved playing board games, traveling, and celebrating Bahamian culture with his precious children who brought him immense joy and pride.
Dr. Unwala is survived by his wife, Rashmi, and their three children, Nikhil (19), Yasmin (15), and Cyrus (10); his parents, Stephanie and Jimmy; his brother Jehan and sister-in-law Kristen; nephews Owen and Ethan; and many loving relatives, including first cousins Kya, Khristy, Lisa, Christopher, Alexander, Matthew, Zubin, Ronny, and Neville; aunts Dianne, Donna, and Bonnie, and a wide circle of family, friends, and colleagues. His intensity, humor, and drive will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of Dr. Unwala's life was held at his home in
Pepper Pike, Ohio, on January 4, 2026. His funeral took place at Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral in Nassau, The Bahamas, on February 7, 2026.
