Barbara Cohen Hammel, a loving mother, devoted grandmother, and great-grandmother whose kindness touched everyone she met, passed away peacefully on November 18th, 2025 at Highland Park Hospital in Highland Park, IL. She was 82.
Born in London, England, on January 16, 1943, Barbara began her life amidst the historic challenges of the bombing of Britain. This early experience instilled in her a resilience and strength that defined her character throughout her long and loving life.
A Life of Dedication, Love, and Art
Barbara's professional journey began with a creative spark as a talented interior decorator. However, her true calling and greatest joy was found in being a stay-at-home mother, dedicating herself entirely to raising her two sons, Richard and Jon.
A woman of great artistic talent, Barbara had a deep passion for the art of oil painting. She often shared her colorful works, displaying her beautiful creations locally for others to enjoy.
Her commitment to her family was unwavering. She worked tirelessly to ensure her youngest son, Jon, who has an intellectual disability, could achieve the highest degree of independence possible, a testament to her profound patience and fierce love. While raising her children, Barbara gave back to her community by volunteering at Highland Park Hospital, offering comfort and assistance to those in need.
Later in life, Barbara transitioned back to the workforce, bringing her warm personality and professionalism to retail. She enjoyed her work at a Hallmark Card store and eventually retired after a fulfilling tenure as a welcoming receptionist at Neiman Marcus.
