Barbara L. Hurley, a cherished matriarch and beacon of compassion, closed her eyes to this world on March 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and warm the hearts of all who knew her. Born in
Hammond, Indiana, on September 11, 1943, to proud parents Arthur and Betty (nee Gildersleeve) Koch, Barbara's life was one of dedication, love, and service.
Her journey began alongside her siblings, and although she was preceded in death by Beverly and David Koch, their memories together remained a source of joy throughout her life. Barbara's spirit is carried on by her devoted husband of nearly 68 years, David L. Hurley, whom she married in the autumnal beauty of Kenosha, Wisconsin, on October 1, 1958. Their partnership was a testament to enduring love and shared values.
The family grew as Barbara became the loving mother to Diane (Mark) Mattingly, David E. (Arlyn) Hurley, and Wendy (Tony) Trial. Her unwavering support and guidance were the cornerstone of their upbringing. Barbara also took immense pride in her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother, cherishing every moment with her nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Her sister Kathy (Bob) Lauer and sister-in-law Sharlene Koch, along with many nieces and nephews, also share in the profound loss of a woman who always prioritized family.
A woman of deep Christian faith, Barbara found solace and strength in her relationship with the Lord. This faith was the compass by which she navigated life's challenges and celebrations, and it provided a source of comfort to those around her.
Barbara possessed a host of talents and interests that enriched the lives of those she touched. An avid gardener, she cultivated beauty not only in her garden beds but also in the lives of her friends and family. Her kitchen was a place of both warmth and wonder, as Barbara was an excellent cook whose recipes brought togetherness and joy. Equally, her love for games and puzzles was a testament to her cleverness and her enduring youthful spirit.
Her departure has left an imprint on the many hearts she has touched. The world may seem a little less bright without Barbara's presence, but the memories of her kindness, her laughter, and her profound love will continue to light the way for all who had the privilege of knowing her. Barbara L. Hurley's life was one well-lived, and her legacy of love and faith will forever be cherished.
There will be a celebration of life at 11:30 a.m., Friday, March 13, 2026 at Graceland Cemetery, 1505 E. Morthland Dr., Valparaiso, 46383. (219) 462-3511. There will be a visitation and viewing from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
