Jean Temple of Groton passed away peacefully on Monday, 19 July, 2021 at the age of 91. Born Barbara Jean Dixon on June 25,1930 in Greenville, SC to Leonard F. Dixon and Mary Hamilton Dixon, she attended Greenville High School. She went on to get her Bachelor's Degree at Furman University, followed by her Master's Degree in Social Work at Tulane University. After graduation she took a position as a Social Worker with The American Red Cross at Fort Bragg, NC. This is where she met her future husband, Roger Temple, who was Company Clerk for the Fort Bragg Hospital Medical Detachment where they would work together coordinating emergency leaves and other services for Army Personnel. After being discharged from the Army, Roger returned to Ohio State University graduate school. Jean left her position with the Red Cross and followed Roger to Columbus, OH where she took a position as Social Worker for the Ohio Tuberculosis Hospital located on the OSU campus. Roger and Jean were married on September 7, 1957. After graduating, Roger took a position with a poultry breeding company in Springdale, AK. During their time in Arkansas, both children were born. In 1962, Roger took a job as a geneticist for the Cobb Poultry Breeding company located in Littleton, MA. Jean took a position with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in the Handicapped Children's Program and later she was made Region II Family Health Services Coordinator. She was further promoted to Regional Manager of the Central Health District. In 1990, she was given a Distinguished Citizen Award by the Northern Worcester County Association for Retarded Citizens for volunteer work with various organizations. She had been a member of the advisory committee for Montachusett Industry Resources and had founded and directed the Early Childhood Network of Central Massachusetts. She also served on the board of directors of Montachusett Home Care Corporation during this time. After her retirement in 1990, Jean began to volunteer for the Senior Center in Groton, which then operated in Squannacook Hall in West Groton. She began arranging day trips for the Seniors to various historical, educational, cultural, and entertaining spots in New England. The trips eventually included several small groups visiting many foreign destinations. She called the group the "Merry Trippers". Jean became a member of the Council On Aging, eventually becoming the Chairperson of the Council. She was very involved in getting the Town of Groton to buy the abandoned VFW hall from the bank so that it could be used as a more spacious Senior Center in 1996. That building served until it was recently torn down and replaced with a larger, more versatile building. A plaque in the new Senior Center commemorates Jean's and 4 other colleagues' efforts to make it happen. She also helped start and run the Friends Of Groton Elders, a group that provides aid to local Seniors in need. One of her many hobbies was sewing. She made a lot of her own clothes. Another hobby was growing flowers which she shared with various businesses around town. She was predeceased by her only sibling, Leonard F. Dixon, Jr. She is survived by her husband, Roger Temple of Groton Mass, her daughter, Julie (Temple) Streeter of Ft. Lauderdale FL, her son, Craig Temple of Doha, Qatar and her niece, Tanni (Dixon) Newlin of Falls Church, VA. No services are planned. I value all my lifetime of memories of Aunt Jean! Always kind and caring and so creative. She and Uncle Wes were always excellent hosts for when my mom would go and stay with them for a visit. I especially remember Aunt Jean for the flowers she loved and was so good at growing. She was talented in so many ways with so many interests. Her sweet, calm voice with the southern influence will always stay with me.

Jean was an inspiration to me from the time I met her at the Groton Senior Center. So many of us enjoyed her bus trips to historical sites, followed by wonderful lunches, trips to Tanglewood, etc. Her Merry Trippers will never forget the outings. Jean's efforts to bring about Friends of the Groton Elders offering lectures, performances and courses, the list of her accomplishments including her social work are endless. She deserves to go to the head of the line of people who's life was well lived. I will never forget my friend.

With deepest sympathy to Mrs. Temple's family. She and my mom, Corinne Moyle had so many adventures together. I always enjoyed going to the house to see her beautiful garden

I came to know Jean through her extensive work with the Senior Center, the Council on Aging and the "Merry Trippers." She had a wonderful community spirit and made unstinting efforts to enhance the quality of life in Groton. She could be very determined, albeit quietly, in pursuing her goal - but always with good cheer! I had at least one interaction with her that showed that she could be willing to compromise for the greater good. She was a person I grew to greatly respect. Rest in peace, Jean, with the knowledge that Groton is a better place for your having been among us.

Julie, Craig and Roger,
I was very sad to hear of Jean's passing. She was a classy lady with a great sense of humor and friendly smile. I'm sure it wasn't easy staying calm during our formative years as we certainly challenged her with unnecessary stress. It seems as Jean and Roger ultimately raised some pretty good kids as did my mom and dad. I know it sounds cliche but she is probably in a better place and still watching over you all. Remember her for class and sweetness.

To Roger, Julie and Craig,
I am very sorry for your loss. Jean along with all of you became a part of my life sometime around 1977 and I have so many great memories since then. Julie, your mother was always welcoming and friendly with her wonderful southern charm, fixing biscuits and fried okra among other tasty delights. My mother enjoyed going on various trips your mother organized. Jean was a kind and giving person and I will miss her company.

May your Mom Rest In Peace, sincere condolences Julie

It was a pleasure to meet Jean in October 2019. I'll never forget her telling me that my story about meeting Carlton Fisk and teaching him to take his first selfie was "...a wonderful story that could have been more interesting." I had provide her some

It was a pleasure to meet Jean in October 2019. I'll never forget her telling me that my story about meeting Carlton Fisk and teaching him to take his first selfie was "...a wonderful story that could have been more interesting." I had provide her some laughs and she more than returned the favor with that summary. My sincere condolences to Julie, "Dak" and Craig. You're a wonderful family that I'm happy to know.

Dear Jean

This morning Julie passed on the sad news of your passing to us, your friends down under. It is news that we received with great sadness.

Many years ago, you invited my family into your home and your world and showed us incredible hospitality and generosity. For me, in particular, as a vistor and later new resident to the US, you and Roger were so important. You helped set me up in my home in Hudson, assisting me to buy a car in so unfamiliar an environment and you gave me a bike so I could explore my new surrounds.

Jean, you were a model human being who taught us all so much about acceptance, compassion and decency.

You and Roger truly inspired me with your your kindness and understated wisdom. Among other things, you demonstrated that the gifts of intelligence and education were not things to be used for selfish gain but to be shared for the common good of humanity (and other creatures for that matter).

Jean, the planet is a little poorer for your passing but it so much richer for your lifetime of contributions to your communities and beyond.

Love
Warrick Glynn (on behalf of the Glynn family)

Dear Mrs. Temple,
I remember you mostly as a mother. You gave your children, Julie and Craig, gentle guidance with (almost) free rein. You had confidence in your children, which in turn gave them confidence in themselves. You understood they were intelligent enough and had the best family foundation to choose what was right for them. You did all this with compassion and love.
I remember your southern belle accent. And the funny nicknames in your family (yours was Seagull?). I didn't understand why, but even if you or Julie had told me the reasons whyI probably wouldn't have understood. This was an inside thing , dually visible and invisible. Afamily thing. You taught me what a loving family looks like and how family dynamics should move inside as well as outside the family boundaries. I felt like family when I visited Julie and you were kind and tolerant (especially of me)
I remember your sweet southern-belle accent. Your house was filled with love, not arguments or raised voices. I told Julie you are the mother I wish I had.
You were a seamstress. I remember Julie had the cutest clothes. You made me a muslin smock top and I loved it. Thank you.
Both yourwith your children are very successful adults. I credit them with their intelligence, and I credit your and Mr. Temple's parenting.
I admire and remember these, and so many other things, about you. So many.
Job well done, Mrs. Temple.
Rest peacefully with the knowledge that a,teenager admired you from afar, without you knowing. Then again, maybe you did know❤
Love,
Laura (Z) Miller
