John Joseph Kapenas, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully on August 27, 2025, in the 91st year of his life. He was in the loving company of his wife and two sons.
John was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1935 and grew up in Groton. He was the first child of John Joseph Kapenas of Lowell and Nora Kapenas ne’e Callaghan of County Clare, Ireland, both of whom met while working at Groton School.
John served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Coral Sea. Upon being honorably discharged, he returned home and, following in the footsteps of his parents, devoted more than 50 years of his life to the Groton School. His dedication and steadfast work left an enduring mark on generations of students and colleagues.
John cherished family above all else and found his greatest joy at Lake Winnekeag in Ashburnham, Massachusetts. There he was, surrounded by loved ones, creating countless memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine “Jerry” of 60 years, his two sons, Joseph and James, and their wives, Nina and Dearbhla. John’s legacy also lives on through his five grandchildren: John-Joseph, Maeve, Jamesie, Donovan, and Caiden.
John will be remembered as a man who “did all things well” — a steady hand, a kind soul, and a life lived with purpose. He was loved dearly by all who had the honor to know him, and his presence will be profoundly missed.
