Barbara Johnson went to be with the Lord peacefully at 7:38 p.m., after a week and a day in the hospital. Her breathing slowed as though her father was gently taking her home. Her heart was strong to the end – until she was set free to go to Julie Ann, her beloved grandmother.
Dedicated to her faith from the age of nine, Barbara never faltered. She loved quietly but surely, moving through life like a hummingbird – graceful, gentle, and full of purpose. A lifelong learner and teacher, she found joy in sharing knowledge with the young and in her love of reading and writing. She could be generous with her treasures, yet always prudent, and she was deeply proud of her papa.
There will be no fanfare with her passing, just as she wished. As she often said, "I am the last leaf on the tree." Her friends and loved ones – mother, father, sister, husband – have all gone before her. She said goodbye to them one by one, and now they are there to welcome her home.
Those who loved her rejoice not at her leaving, but at her peace – well deserved after a life of quiet strength and dignity. She faced age and frailty with grace, accepted kindness, and relied on the compassion of those who cared for her. Each morning, she was grateful for one more sunrise. She did not surrender – she graduated.
A private committal service will be held in the new Chapel of Light at the J. Herman Humphrey Dignity Cremation Center, under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service.
