ALBANY - Barbara Goldman Lewinter, 78 of Albany, passed away peacefully at home on September 30, 2023.
Born on August 3, 1945, in New York City, she was the loving daughter of Joseph and Dorothy Goldman. She was predeceased by her parents; brother, Arnold Goldman; and husband of 43 years, Orest Lewinter.
Barbara was born in the Bronx and lived on Forsyth Street on the Lower East Side until second grade when she moved Upstate to Nassau for several years before moving to Albany. She attended Hackett Junior High School and Albany High School. Barbara met Orest at SUNY Albany in the 1960s and they remained in the Albany area for the rest of their lives.
Barbara is survived by her two children, Keith Lewinter (Loida), and Sharon Gleiberman (Owen); and her six grandchildren, Joey Lewinter, Lily Gleiberman, Max Lewinter, Sadie Gleiberman, Nate Lewinter, and Carly Gleiberman. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life. She would light up when around them. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and lifelong friends - many of whom she thought of as siblings.
Barbara was a very proud and loving mother and ran a daycare in her home when her children were young. She was also her son's Cub Scout den leader for several years. Barbara later worked as a nursery school teacher at the JCC for many years. She loved reading and was an avid lifelong learner, attending many lectures and conferences. She loved to travel. Some of her favorite memories were traveling the country with her husband and children, every summer in their camper - a converted 1981 white Dodge van. She loved being around children and helping to teach them the most important lessons in life like treating everyone how you want to be treated. She lived by the golden rule.
Funeral services for Barbara will be held graveside on Monday, October 9, in the Workmen's Circle Cemetery, 1620 Western Ave., Guilderland.
