Barbara Brack Lewis

Barbara Brack Lewis, a life-long resident of Chatham Borough and Madison, NJ, passed away quietly in her sleep at age 69 on October 22, 2025, following a brief illness. She was born on September 8, 1956, graduated from Madison High School, Augustana College in Rock Island, IL and Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ. She was a speech and language pathologist in the Chester Township school district for nearly forty years, before retiring in 2018.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 21 years, Jeffrey Lewis, and by her sisters Susan Mummert and Janet Wagstaff (Rick), her step-son Alexander Lewis, her nieces Lauren Alavanja (Branko), Megan Mummert (Tom), and Kate Lew (Mark), her nephews Matthew Mummert, Andrew Wagstaff and William Wagstaff, and her very special great-nephews Aleksandar and Oliver Alavanja.
The broad themes of Barbara's life are family, faith, music, love of nature, and a curious mind. She loved her nieces Lauren and Megan and her nephews Matthew, Andrew and Bill as if they were her own children, never forgetting a birthday or holiday card and traveling to see them at least once a year, and attended every graduation, every wedding. When she met her husband Jeff late in life, they started a new life together traveling around the U.S. and Europe and began a life-long activity of birding wherever they went. Her marriage in 2004 expanded the family she loved by adding "Uncle Jeff" to the mix.
Barbara was an accomplished singer, a choir member of the United Methodist Church in Madison for more than 50 years, and a company member of Ridge Light Opera and the Light Opera of New Jersey for many years where she performed nearly every Gilbert and Sullivan opera and a host of other shows. Recently Barbara and Jeff joined the Rose City Songsters, where they sang at nearby nursing homes and senior centers.
Barbara was an avid reader, an active member of her book group, and a frequent visitor to her public library. She loved baking, and she especially loved feeding the birds. Barbara was a humble, caring and kind person and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Visitation will be at the Bradley & Son Funeral Homes, 345 Main St., Chatham on Sunday, October 26 from 3 pm to 7 pm. Private interment. A memorial service will be scheduled at the United Methodist Church in Madison, 24 Madison Ave., Madison, NJ at a later date.
