BARBARA ANN LYCAN
10-26-1930 to 04-16-2024
My mother, Barbara, was born in
Miami Beach, FL to Alfred Dreyer, born in Lucerne, Switzerland, and Caroline Harms-Dreyer, born in
New York City, NY.
Being a chef, my grandfather worked in many different cities in the U.S. in hotels and country clubs. When the country clubs in the north would shut down for the winter, he and my grandmother would head south for work.
That being said, Mom traveled a lot in her young age with her parents following their employment. Each year for vacation, they would travel back to Germany and Switzerland to visit family there. They would also travel to other European countries while visiting.
Mom worked as a desk clerk in NYC at a hotel where my grandfather was employed. It was there she met my father, Joseph Lycan, who was a private pilot for Texas Eastern Transmission Corp. based in Shreveport, LA.
After they got married in 1955, we lived in Shreveport, LA before daddy was transferred to Houston. Mom had a wonderful life traveling with daddy and where they joined Golfcrest CC. Sadly, my dad passed away when I was just 12.
Mom had a flare for fashion. Having worked at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York, it wasn't surprising she easily got a job at Saks in Houston as manager of the men's department. It was there that she met Dick Harmon, Head Golf Professional at River Oaks Country Club who was immediately impressed by her engaging personality and excellent customer service. Mom worked for Dick and his lovely wife, Nancy, for twenty years.
After she retired from River Oaks, and being an avid golfer, she joined Sugar Creek CC and really enjoyed playing out there. One of the first friends she met was Gloria Kurz. Gloria was so welcoming her into the group.
As mom aged, she moved closer to Joe and I and joined Raveneaux CC. As her illness and neuropathy progressed and ultimately consumed her body, she was unable to play golf anymore. In need of more assistance, we then moved her into The Conservatory where Frances Reyes was her caregiver for years. Thank God for her. Mom's final home was Village Care Home Assisted Living. The staff members were angels and took such good care of her until her passing. Thank you, Fallon, Madison, Taylor, and Carrie, for your dedication, excellence, and patience beyond the call of duty in around the clock care. Also, a thank you to Charlie Flanaga, hospice chaplain, for visiting my mother, praying with her, singing with her. I am forever grateful. Finally, a huge thank you to Tanya, mom's hospice nurse, for your compassionate care.
God Bless you all.
I loved my mom and will miss her deeply.
