Barbara Mattina Obituary
Family & friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, October 7th from 9:30 am to 11:30 am in the Vertuccio Smith & Vazza Beechwood Home for Funerals, 262 Beach St., Revere for Barbara M. (Scali) Mattina who died on Thursday, October 3rd at the Brigham Women's Hospital in Boston, following a brief illness, she was 81 years old. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 noon at Sacred Heart Church, 45 Brooks St., East Boston. Interment immediately followed in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
Barbara was born in Boston on March 28, 1943, to her late parents, John J. Scali & Anna (Giannetti) Scali. She was one of two children, raised and educated in East Boston. She was an alumna of Sacred Heart High School in East Boston, Class of 1961.
Barbara was a loving mother who proudly raised her children in East Boston. During this time, she worked as a salesperson at Miller Furs in Boston. She also was their feature model for their weekly ads. She then later took a position for J & J Express in East Boston, where she worked as an office manager. She was a woman who possessed both style and grace, and her personality also reflected the same. She was later married on October 19, 1980, to her husband Joseph Mattina, Jr. The couple relocated to Lynnfield in 1988 where they have been living. Family was the absolute most important part of her life. She treasured her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She looked forward to speaking to her grandchildren and hearing about any news they had to share with her. Spending time with them was her happiest time. Barbara, although being a woman of grace and beauty also possessed an incredible amount of courage and will. She is a cancer survivor and was very proud of her hard-fought battle. She was always grateful to the many doctors, nurses, and staff at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, for all that they did for her. A special thank you to Dr. Arvind Ravi MD PhD, who was very special to Barbara. She will forever be loved and remembered.
She is the beloved wife of 44 years to Joseph J. Mattina, Jr. of Lynnfield. The loving mother of Stephanie A. DiCenso & husband David of East Boston and Christopher Tanner & wife Sarah of Peabody. The cherished grandmother of John DiCenso & wife Jacqueline, David DiCenso, and Alexandria DiCenso all of East Boston, A.J. Tanner, Adrianna Tanner & Ava Tanner all of Peabody. Adored great grandmother of Anastasia & Giovanni. She is the dear sister of Joseph Scali & his late wife Marie of Peabody. Also lovingly survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168 Boston, MA 02284.
