Obituary published on Legacy.com by Foreman Brown-Service Funeral Home, Inc. - Andalusia on Oct. 1, 2025.
Barbara Ann McCommons, known as Bobbie to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2025, at Crowne Health Care of Greenville, AL.
She was born in Atlanta, Georgia on April 4, 1932 to Margaret and Grier McCommons.
Bobbie moved to Andalusia before she turned one year old. Early on, the community looked after her as one of their own. When she fell ill as a toddler, her family published a note in the Andalusia Star reassuring its readers that "Little Barbara Ann McCommons, who has been ill with pneumonia, is improving rapidly."
Bobbie grew up playing every summer with her Atlanta cousins and loved to tell the young people in her family about all the games you could play with just a stick and some friends. In Andalusia, she was adopted by her Ingram family in-laws as one of their own.
Bobbie was raised by her mother and grandmother, both strong woman who believed in the importance of education. She attended Andalusia High School and Troy State Teachers College. In 1953, she began her 38-year career as a teacher in Pace, Niceville, and Pensacola, Florida.
In Pensacola, she was active in the McIlwain Presbyterian Church and made many friends there. Bobbie was loved by her students, who sent her many letters over the years letting her know her influence on their life. She was known as a loveable teacher with eyes in the back of her head that nobody could fool. She loved to use Pig Latin on her students to see who was quick enough to pick up on an inside joke or two.
Bobbie was famous among family and friends for never forgetting a birthday. Her cards arrived regular as rain even when you thought everyone had forgotten. She loved family history and collected stories on the McCommons, Reynolds and McMurchy's to pass on to the next generation.
In retirement, Bobbie returned to Andalusia, where she was a devoted community member. She regularly delivered food to homebound neighbors and read stories to residents at Andalusia Manor nursing home. She was active as a Deacon and choir member at First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School for more than twenty years.
As one of her fellow church members wrote for the paper, "She has taught hundreds of children stories of the Bible, written hundreds of get-well cards to sick folks, spent hundreds of hours visiting the sick at their homes and at the nursing home, and delivered hundreds of flowers to the elderly. That is extraordinary!"
Bobbie's love for people extended to animals, and everyone knew she never saw a dog she didn't like. Over the years, she took on many a pup that needed a home.
Bobbie is survived by her cousins George Reynolds, Ken Reynolds, and Martha Reynolds Sorensen. Funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 223 South Three Notch St. on Friday, September 19th at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Magnolia Cemetery. Friends are invited to join the family at a reception at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Andalusia Area Humane society or to the First Presbyterian Church of
Andalusia, AL.
