Barbara L. "Norton" Monnat

CROGHAN- Barbara Louise Monnat, 89, of Belfort Road, passed away on Monday August 11, 2025 at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.

A funeral Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday August 20, 2025 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Croghan with Rev. Donald Manfred, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery, Belfort. There are no calling hours. A meal at the Croghan American Legion will immediately follow the burial, all are welcome. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Stephen's Catholic Church Restoration Fund, P.O. Box 38, Croghan, NY 13327. Arrangements are with Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.

She is survived by her husband of over 70 years, Gordon; six children, Paul (Christina) Monnat of Lowville, NY; Doug (Carol) Monnat of Indian River, NY; Mike (Vanessa) Monnat of Croghan, NY; Denise Monnat of Asheville, NC; Judy (James) Widrick of Lowville, NY; Bethany Brunell (and friend, Clyde Simmons) of Lowville, NY; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by a sister, Mary Callahan; and two brothers, Frederick and Lawrence Norton.

Barbara was born on August 2, 1936 in Houseville, NY, a daughter of the late Edgar and Bertha Merry Norton. She attended several country schools and graduated in 1953 from General Martin High School in Glenfield. On October 9, 1954, she married Gordon Paul Monnat at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Croghan. Barbara worked for several organizations throughout the years, including her family's business, Monnat & Son Plumbing and Heating in Belfort, Household Gas Station in Houseville, and at various hotels in the area as a waitress and bartender. She also worked for Community Bank at the Tops Plaza, Beaverite Products in Beaver Falls, and at Meade Optical in Lowville. Barbara served as the Town of Croghan Tax Collector and worked for the Lewis County Board of Elections.

Barbara was a communicant of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Croghan. She was a member of Croghan Bowling League. Barbara enjoyed crocheting and knitting throws and socks, providing gifts for many people. She enjoyed playing cards, especially Euchre, trips to casinos, and attending auctions, especially David Johnson Auctions. Barbara enjoyed watching Gunsmoke. Together with Gordon, she enjoyed camping in their RV around the area, and spending time with family and friends.

Barb often spoke of how she and Gordie met on the Harley Stoddard farm outside of Lowville (now the O'Brien farm). She worked in-house, and he worked on the farm. Their first date was to the movies in Carthage along with a friend, mentioned all three won at "QUIZNO" that night which was a plus.

In the last month Barb was able to attend several events including Boomer Ritz' camp party, the Monnat reunion, her birthday party at home and at Gordie and Barb's camp for lunch. She was happy to be able to talk to so many friends and relatives, she truly enjoyed visiting with people, and will be dearly missed by many.
