Barbara Moultrie Obituary

Published by Legacy on Dec. 11, 2025.
With immeasurable sorrow and utmost pride in her unrelenting spirit, the family of Barbara Black Moultrie, 69, of Byhalia, MS, shares news of her passing. For years, despite continuously being underestimated and counted out, she defied all odds placed upon her and consistently rose to fight every obstacle set before her. The battle finally proved too much for her earthly body to handle. On the evening of Wednesday, December 3, 2025, surrounded by family, her hard fought battle came to a peaceful end, giving her well deserved rest and relief from unimaginable suffering.

Barbara Lynn Black was born September 28, 1956 to Myrtle and Charles Douglas Black in Memphis, TN. She grew up in Whitehaven, where she loved to share stories involving lifelong friends. After graduating from Hillcrest Highschool in 1974, Barbara studied interior design and home merchandising at Memphis State University, ultimately earning her bachelor's degree. She worked at several places following completion of her degree. However, the roles she was most proud of were wife and mother.

In 1978, Barbara met the love of her life and husband of 47 years, Jerry Moultrie. Six months later they were married. They had three children, Bryan, Lewis, and Carrie. She took great pride in being a stay at home wife and mother and a fierce advocate for her children. In 1997, after battling breast cancer, Barbara entered a new phase of life filled with lifelong "Bosom Buddies", learning to navigate the internet, message boards, arranging and organizing group meetings around the country, and working together with her fellow breast cancer buddies to write and compile a cookbook that led to her being featured on the nationwide NBC Nightly News. She was immensely proud of her involvement in not only this project, but more importantly her connection and friendships with these amazing women. It made a tremendous impact on her life and who she was. These women helped her establish herself as a survivor, a label that she clung to and served her well for the rest of her life.

The next phase of life, perhaps the most cherished, was her role as Memaw. She loved her children fiercely, but words cannot describe the feeling of being a grandmother. Even in the hardest moments, her whole face would light up at the mention or sound of her grandchildren. That smile could light up a thousand rooms.

Among her many talents and accomplishments, she was an artist. She loved sharing her talent through gifts of drawings, paintings, crafts, sewing, and crochet. She also had a gift with words, both spoken and written, which she shared with others and kept for herself. Inspired to create and contribute, she submitted a painting for consideration in an art contest celebrating the opening of the Baptist Cancer Center. Her artwork was chosen and featured in a published calendar, traveled to Europe on display as part of an art tour exhibit, and is now hanging in the Baptist DeSoto Hospital Cancer Center, inspiring and comforting women for generations to come.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Jerry Moultrie, two sons, Bryan Moultrie (Stacey) of Cumming, GA and Lewis Moultrie (Brittany) of Hernando, MS, daughter, Carrie Glancy (Patrick) of Hernando, MS, and 7 grandchildren, Daniel, Kaitlyn, Aubrey, Hadley (Bryan), Ginny and Reagan (Lewis), and Fitz (Carrie). She is also survived by her big brother, Charlie Black, Jr. of Bartlett, TN and two sisters, Jennifer Baird of Southaven, MS and Pat Cox (Rick) of Bartlett, TN, as well as, many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles Douglas Black and Myrtle Black, along with several dear family members and friends.

A memorial service to honor the impact she made in the lives of those fortunate to have known her will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at 2PM at Buntyn Presbyterian Church in Memphis, TN. Although flowers are welcome and appreciated, the family requests that any donations be made in memory of Barbara Black Moultrie to the National MS Society, the American Diabetes Association, or to Buntyn Presbyterian Church.

Dear Bryan, Lewis, and Carrie, I first came to know your dear Mom at the dance studio while waiting for you and my two children to finish class. We then had many deep conversations at church. Her love for your Dad and all of you was unmatched. Please accept my condolences. Love, Charlotte Maybry
