Barbara Jean Smith-Tiano, 81, of the Town of Ulster, passed away at home, surrounded by her family, Wednesday, December 25, 2024. Born April 4,1943 in Albany, NY, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Catherine (Crantz) Schiskey.
Prior to her retirement from MARPAC industries in the Town of Ulster, where she worked over 20 years, she worked in retail and as waitress, but most importantly she was everyone's caregiver influencing many generations of family she cared for.
She was the center of her family, creating traditions and hosting gatherings. She was the glue connecting our large widespread family, making sure everyone knew all the family stories and kept us all together. After raising her own children and helping with her family of 11 siblings she was very involved in the upbringing of her grandchildren and their children. Her Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren were her world. She touched all hearts she crossed paths with and was lovingly referred to as "the mayor," as everywhere we went as she always knew someone.
Barbara is survived by her children; George Smith (Teresa) and Michele Smith. Siblings; Marion Smith (Nelson), Cathy Constable, John Schiskie (Anna), James Schiskey (Yvette) and William Schiskie (Laura). Grandchildren; Jessica Negron (Rafael) & Cassie Smith. Surviving Great-Grandchildren; Blaise Negron, Bayleigh Negron, Emma Vermilling, Alaina Vermilling, Feona Torres. Many nieces and nephews and treasured friends also survive.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, George Smith Sr. (2003), and their son Kevin Smith, her second husband Joseph Tiano (2021), siblings Ronald Schiskey, Fred Schiskie, Michael Schiskey, Joan Carchidi, and Diane Short.
She will be missed beyond measure and her memory will forever be a blessing to all who knew her.

My nanny had her faults and flaws like every other human being in this room, but one thing I always knew for sure is that she loved me. Any school event she was at. Anything I wanted she always got no matter what. My nanny was a remarkable woman. She had the kind of strength and resilience that inspired everyone around her. She taught me so much about life, love, and the importance of family. Her laughter was contagious, and her hugs were the warmest and most comforting place in the world. She always knew how to make me feel special and loved, no matter what. Ever since I was a little girl you could always find us attached at the hip no matter where it was whether we were making trips to the mall, I was climbing behind her sink to clean the hard to reach spots or just walking around the park. She had a way of making oridanary days into the most exciting and memorable days. Her guidance and wisdom shaped me into who I am today and I don´t know who I would be without her. And for that I´m forever grateful My nanny's love and legacy will live on in my heart forever. Though she may no longer be with us physically, her spirit will always be a part of me. I love you forever
