Barbara Vatter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hitesman-Holdship Funeral Home on Jan. 19, 2026.
Cadillac - Barbara Lee Vatter, longtime resident of Cadillac, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. She was 82.

Barbara was born on April 20, 1943, in Oswego, New York, one of four children of Russell and Harriett (Smith) Parnell. She grew up in Fayetteville and earned her bachelor's degree from Kent State University in Ohio. From there, life took her across the Atlantic to London, through the South, and eventually to Michigan, a journey that reflected her adaptable spirit and openness to new chapters.

For over a decade, Barb made her living as a caregiver and manager for Seneca Place Home, a role she embraced with patience, dignity, and genuine concern for the well-being of those she served.

An avid reader, Barb found great joy in mystery novels, always eager to turn the next page and unravel the story. She cherished her bridge club and delighted in playing cards with friends, valuing the laughter, camaraderie, and friendships those gatherings brought into her life.

At home, Barb took pride in tending to her flowers and fruit trees, finding peace and satisfaction in nurturing things as they grew. Music and thoughtful conversation filled her days as she enjoyed listening to public radio, including Interlochen Public Radio, which provided both comfort and connection to the wider world. Barb will be remembered for her dedication to service and the simple pleasures she so deeply appreciated. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Barbara is survived by her son, Vincent Vatter of Gainesville, FL; her beloved granddaughters, Madison and Vienna Vatter of Florida; two sisters, Patricia and Laurel; as well as many other loving family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Tanya Vatter; and her brother, Jon Parnell.

Per her wishes cremation has taken place and no services will be held at this time. Memorial contributions in Barbara's name may be directed to Interlochen Public Radio.
