Barbara Ann Zembsch, a beacon of faith and passion, passed away on July 16, 2025, in Irvine, California. Born on the last day of 1932 in Portland, Oregon, Barbara lived a life marked by dedication to education, family, and her devout Catholic faith.
Growing up amidst the verdant beauty of Portland, Barbara's early years were shaped by the rigorous academics and spiritual guidance she received at local Catholic schools. Her commitment to learning and her love for the Lord were evident from a young age, leading her to pursue and achieve degrees from both Catholic High School and Catholic College. Her education laid a foundation for what would become a distinguished career as a special education teacher. For nearly three decades, Barbara worked tirelessly in Orange County, helping countless children with diverse needs to reach their fullest potential. Her belief in the transformative power of education touched many lives, both within and beyond her classroom walls.
Family was the cornerstone of Barbara's world. She is survived by her loving son James and his partner Christina Zembsch; her cherished daughters Mary and her husband Michael Logsdon, Julie and her husband Mike Krempa; and her adored grandchildren Stacy, Steven, Krista, Scott, and Nick. Her brother James O'Hanlon also remains to honor her memory. Each family gathering was a testament to Barbara's love, and her legacy will continue to flourish through them.
Barbara's faith was her guiding light, and she lived it with fervor. Attending Mass was not just a weekly ritual but a keystone of her daily life. Her spiritual devotion provided her with comfort and strength, and she was a familiar face to her church community, where she attended services multiple times a week.
Her interests were as varied as they were vibrant. Barbara had a knack for bridge, which she played with the same strategy and grace that she approached life. Holidays were a special delight for her; she reveled in decorating her home with an eye for detail and a touch of whimsy. Each festive season was an opportunity for Barbara to share her joy and creativity with those around her. Her thoughtful nature shone brightly as she remembered friends and family with carefully chosen cards for every occasion.
Barbara's zest for life extended to her daily routines. She was an advocate of staying active, enjoying daily walks and regular visits to the gym. Her love for sports cars was more than a hobby-it was a thrill that brought a spark to her eyes. She approached driving with the same enthusiasm that she did everything else in her life, sometimes a little too fast for comfort but always with a spirit of adventure.
Collecting baskets and ceramics, Barbara surrounded herself with items that brought her joy and reflected her organized and tidy nature. Everything in her home had a place, and she took great satisfaction in the order and beauty she created in her personal spaces.
Barbara was known for her conservative values, which she held dear and lived by with quiet assurance. She spoke softly but carried the weight of her convictions with unwavering strength.
Barbara Ann Zembsch's life was one of purpose and passion. Her faith-filled journey, her dedication to the world of education, and her boundless love for her family have left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her memory will be cherished and her presence deeply missed. Barbara's story does not end with her passing but continues in the lives of those she inspired and loved.
Barbara will be laid to rest at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
