Barry L. Bartsch, a devoted family man, respected community leader, and lifelong servant to others, passed away on March 23, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 12, 1948, and lived a life defined by dedication, ingenuity, and an unwavering commitment to those around him.

Barry’s legacy is deeply rooted in his extraordinary service to the Alsace Manor Fire Company, where he joined at just 14 years old. Over an incredible 57 years of service, he held many roles, including Fire Chief, and became a mentor to generations of firefighters. Known for his passion for training, Barry took pride in teaching proper rope knots and essential skills, ensuring those he trained were always prepared. His service helped save lives, homes, and strengthened the fabric of his community. Around the firehouse, he was also fondly known for “cutting rolls” during hoagie sales, a small but memorable part of his larger-than-life presence.

Barry also served his community as an Alsace Township Supervisor for several years, further demonstrating his commitment to making a difference where he lived.

Throughout his life, Barry worked hard and wore many hats- so many, in fact, that he proudly “retired” four times, but went straight back to work shortly after. His careers included working at Levan’s Truck & Equipment as a Parts & Equipment Delivery Driver, H&K as a Heavy Equipment Operator (Gradall), Willow Creek Fuels as a Gasoline Delivery Driver, and Blackwood Golf Course as a Groundskeeper. No matter the role, Barry brought dedication, skill, and pride to his work.

Barry earned the nickname “MacGyver” for his unmatched ability to tinker, build, and fix just about anything. Whether it was crafting something from scratch or solving a problem with a creative twist, he approached life with curiosity, resourcefulness, and a touch of humor.

Barry embraced life fully and found joy in simple, meaningful traditions. He loved boating and camping, Friday night dinners with family and friends, and annual trips to Northeast Maryland with visits to Woody’s. Family vacations to the Outer Banks and Maine were among his most treasured times, where being surrounded by loved ones meant everything to him. He was also a proud member of the Evergreen German Club and the Pricetown Rod & Gun Club.

Some of his happiest moments were spent with his breakfast club, especially his dear friend Pooch, often followed by long motorcycle rides that gave him a sense of freedom and peace.

Above all, Barry was a family man. He shared 25 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Tammy L. (Bretz) Bartsch. He was a proud father to Wendy L. Becker and father-in-law to Wayne L. Becker. He cherished his role as “Pop Pop” to his grandsons, Wayne L. Becker Jr. (Alexis Becker) and Tyler W. Becker (Maria Hess), and was overjoyed to see his family grow with great-grandsons, Brody and Noah Becker. His loyal “doggy daughter,” Gretta Bartsch, held a special place in his heart.

Barry was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas and Gilberta (Winter) Bartsch, his aunt, Mary Reiss, his uncles, Robert and William Winter as well as his other “doggy daughter” Shiane.

Through his marriage to Tammy, Barry’s family grew even larger. He is also survived by Cindy (Ruffner) Dever (Mike), Randy Ruffner (Billie), his brother-in-law Jack Bretz (Tami), sisters-in-law Heidi Hetrick (Todd) and Karla Lawrence (Thomas), along with many cherished nieces and nephews.

Barry will be remembered for his strength, generosity, humor, and the countless lives he touched. Whether through his decades of service, his willingness to lend a hand, or simply the way he showed up for his family and friends, Barry left a lasting impact that will never be forgotten.

His life was one of purpose, love, and connection, and his legacy will live on in all who had the privilege to know him.

A viewing will be held on March 30, 2026, from at 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at Milkins Trymbiski Funeral Home, 4914 Kutztown Road, Temple, PA 19560. This will be followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m., allowing family, friends, and community members the opportunity to pay their respects and celebrate the life of a truly remarkable man. Burial will take place in Berks County Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Barry's name may be made to the Evergreen German Club, 415 Hartz Rd, Fleetwood, PA 19522.

Barry L. Bartsch’s life was a testament to perseverance, kindness, and the enduring strength of family and community. His memory will remain a guiding light and source of inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know him
