Barry Bruce Berkenstock, 83, of Schuylkill Haven, passed away peacefully at home with his
family by his side on Saturday, March 22.
Born in Reading, PA on October 13, 1941, he was the son of the late Albert and Arline (Levan)
Berkenstock.
Barry was married 61 years to the love of his life, Kathleen Mary (Vogel) Berkenstock.
A graduate of West Reading High School, Barry participated in football and wrestling, and once
tried to convince his kids he invented the headlock. He served as a radarman in the U.S. Navy
onboard the SS Swerve.
He retired as chief draftsman and project manager for Ebinger Iron Works after 40 years of
service to the company. Prior to that he held a position at Reading Metal Craft.
Barry and Kathy grew up (literally) next door to one another in West Reading, PA, though Barry
didn't much notice "little Kathy Vogel" until he returned from the Navy and spotted a cute girl at
a local dance. As he often said, "My eyes popped out of my head like a cartoon character."
In addition to his wife, Barry is survived by his son, Brian Berkenstock, of Lansdale; daughter,
Jennifer Berkenstock, wife of David Hair, of Schuylkill Haven; and his sister, Marie, wife of Joel
Behney, of Florida. He was a proud "Pa" to Dylan, Hannah, and Amelia Berkenstock, Ian
McGowan, Nicholas and Daniel Hair, and Angelo Maldonado.
Barry was a lifelong golfer, holiday poker player, one-time bowler (with one perfect game!), and
occasional pickle ball player. He cherished annual golf trips to Myrtle Beach with his father
Albert and nephews Frank and David May - a tradition rich in laughs, stories, and maybe a
few mulligans.
At 5 p.m. sharp, Barry enjoyed his evening martini - and if you were lucky, a plate of his
signature dish, pulled pork and baked beans.
He appreciated life's simple joys: a clean swing (not always so simple), a house full of family
and friends, good conversation at the kitchen table, and lots of laughter. Lots.
