Barry Friedman Obituary

Barry H. Friedman, M.D., J.D., M.B.A., a retired Radiologist, Nuclear Medicine Physician, and Attorney of Sanibel, Florida, and Stevenson, Maryland, passed away on June 13, 2024 at the age of 79 from Cancer. He is survived by his loving, devoted wife of almost 57 years, his high school sweetheart, Marsha Lee Friedman (nee Rosenthal); his loving and devoted children, Dr. Heather M. Friedman (Dr. Jeffrey Sternlicht) of Baltimore, Maryland and Dr. Jarrod Friedman (Dr. Heidi Frere Friedman) of Delray Beach, Florida; his loving grandson, Maxwell Sternlicht; his sweet grandson, Matthew Friedman; his sweet granddaughter, Sarah Friedman; and his furry children, Bailey, Pepper, Tuesday and Valentina.

He was predeceased by his parents Dr. Marion and Esther (Lerner) Friedman.

Barry was born March 18, 1945 in Joplin, Missouri while his late parent's were stationed there during WWII. The family would return to Maryland where Barry would meet the love of his life, Marsha. Barry graduated Forest Park High School. He attended the former Western Maryland College and graduated 3 years later. Barry attended the University of Maryland Medical School, and at the end of his second year, Barry and Marsha got married. He went on to Washington Hospital Center for his internship and was in the Air Force and received an honorable discharge. Barry decided to pursue Radiology. His residency was at Sinai Hospital and he was then accepted as a Fellow in the emerging field of Nuclear Medicine at Johns Hopkins University under the guidance of Dr. Henry Wagner, "Father Of Nuclear Medicine". Barry received multiple awards, and wrote and presented extensively throughout the country and internationally. He went on to be recommended to establish and become the first Chief of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the original Anne Arundel General Hospital now known as Anne Arundel Medical Center.

In 1976 Barry was instrumental in bringing the first Cat Scanner to the state of Maryland, allowing patients from the Mid-Atlantic to be brought to Annapolis for state of the art critical diagnostic scans. Barry's innovative and forward thinking became a model for other hospitals.

In 1987 Barry graduated from University of Baltimore Law school, and a few years later after receiving his MBA, enjoyed teaching Business Law part-time.

Throughout the years Barry enjoyed walking with one of his many furry children, or with family, giving him the opportunity to visit with neighbors along the way. He especially enjoyed his walks at the beach near his home in Sanibel, Florida and taking photos. Barry loved traveling with his entire family, especially while his children were growing up, and then as his grandchildren came along.

Barry was very philanthropic. Barry and Marsha established the "Marion and Esther Friedman Family Health Center" at the University of Maryland Medical Center which serves over 60,000 patients annually, including house calls.

Barry will always be remembered for his humble, kind, loving, gentle, generous, and giving nature. He was a devoted family man and helped any person or animal in need. He leaves behind not only his loving family but his many special friends who will dearly miss him always. Devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Barry cherished every moment spent with his family and he will be missed forever.
