Barry Grindberg, 71, Velva, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2025 at his home.
Barry was born on March 6, 1953 in Minot to Victor and LaVina (Krumwiede) Grindberg. He was raised on the family farm north east of Velva, North Dakota on the Mouse River. Barry went to grade school at Mimer and Simco schools before attending Velva Public High School.
After graduation he attended Minot State College. His military draft number was #1 so he preemptively enlisted in the US Navy in 1973 where he served for nearly 5 years. While he was stationed at the U.S Naval Base in Subic Bay, Philippines Barry met his wife, Rachely Beroncal. He would later be stationed at the Naval Air Facility in Adak, Alaska before he was honorably discharged in 1977.
Barry began working at the Velva Basin Electric Power Plant in 1978 where he worked in supply chain logistics as a shipping operator for 10 years. He then was hired at the Minot Air Force Base with the 5th Civil Engineer Squadron where he played a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the base's facilities and infrastructure. After 30 years, he retired from civil service in 2018 and thereafter worked at CF Industries in Velva until 2024.
In his free time Barry enjoyed fixing old cars, gardening with his wife, dropping into a friend's house for a quick cup of coffee, playing Bingo and spending time with family. He was a Commander at the Velva American Legion and a member of Fil Am Minot, a North Dakota non-profit organization made up of Filipino and American volunteers.
Barry is survived by his wife, Rachely Grindberg, Velva; sons, Archie Grindberg of Chaffee, North Dakota, and Cody Grindberg of Minot; daughters, Anna Raynor of Chaffee, Rashel Wilson of Zurich, Switzerland, and Sarah Eliason of Velva; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild; sisters, Cheryl (Ossie) Vinesett of Velva, and Cindy Culbertson, Freemont, NE; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Victor and LaVina Grindberg; and a sister, Vicky Hart.
A memorial service is planned for springtime.
