Barry Johnson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Robertson Funeral Directors - Clarendon on Feb. 5, 2026.
Barry Eugene Johnson, known to family as Uncle B and just B to many others, was born October 20, 1950, in Matador, Texas, to Ober and Wandell Johnson. Barry grew up in Quitaque, Texas and Wellington, Texas, graduating from Wellington High School as valedictorian of his class. He earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Baylor University, graduating in 1973.

Barry had many interests and avocations, but the greater part of his life revolved around his work at Graybar Electric and his service at St. Philip's United Methodist Church of Round Rock, Texas. He worked at Graybar's Austin branch for 39 years, moving from counter sales through various sales and management positions. He thoroughly enjoyed his work, and especially his workmates. His natural wit and his hard work made him a favorite in the workplace.

He joined St. Philip's church soon after it was chartered, and served in numerous capacities over several decades. His best-loved service was to the church's music ministry. He was a talented pianist and vocalist, and was a faithful choir member, substitute accompanist, and regular soloist. His spot in the choir loft was faithfully filled week after week for over 40 years.

B was an avid collector. He started collecting stamps when in elementary school, adding baseball cards, comic books, and Star Wars memorabilia in subsequent years. His love of reading made collecting books a natural part of his life. By the time he retired from Graybar, he had accumulated a spare room full of his various collections. Characteristically, the collections were all well cataloged and cared for.

Another favorite pastime was Round Rock Express baseball. There was no greater pleasure for him than to spend a summer evening at the ballpark. He was a fan of the Texas Rangers, but his greatest sports love was the Express.

After he retired, he continued to follow the fortunes of his old company, meeting regularly for lunches with a group of former colleagues who named themselves the Graybar Geezers. His service to St. Philip's continued as well, especially as a choir member. Failing health caused his move to Wellington, Texas to be near his brothers and their families. He lived in Parkview Manor Assisted Living facility from December 2023 until his passing, where he was a beloved friend and neighbor.

Barry was preceded in death by his parents, Ober and Wandell Johnson, older brother and sister-in law Jon and Willa Dale Johnson, and sister-in-law Mary Johnson.

Those left to honor his memory include brothers Jamie Johnson, and Dickie Johnson and wife Holly; nieces Amy Moore and husband Greg, Elizabeth Johnson-Black, Katie Barron and husband Joel; Molly Johnson; and Chelsea Bran and husband Alejos; nephews Colin Johnson and wife Kelley; Lucas Johnson, and Ethan Johnson and wife Lauryn; and grand-nieces and nephews Harrison Black, Jonathan Moore, Jacob Moore, Jonah Moore, Drew Barron, Alex Barron, James Johnson, Maddy Johnson, Fox Johnson, Evelyn Bran and Asher Bran.

Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, February 7, 2026 in North Fairview Cemetery in Wellington, Texas.

Arrangements are under the care of Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.

Barry and the music director at St. Philip´s United Methodist Church began providing music for services, with a lay speaker, at a nearby senior living residence. They had been doing this for a few years, every Sunday morning before the service in our chapel, when my wife and I joined them in 2010 to help with the services. Barry loved playing piano and singing there. Barry played and I spoke on March 8, 2020, just before the COVID shutdown. A very sad time for everyone. Barry sang tenor, though, and I sang bass in one of the "socially distanced" quartets formed for our streamed church services. We looked forward to being able to return to having services for the seniors down the street, whom we missed so much. We were the first to resume those services, almost exactly 3 years after our last time there, on March 5, 2023. Barry´s joy in music, his warm voice, his kindness, and his relaxed, friendly manner continued to bring happiness there and with his St. Philip´s choir family until shortly before his move to Wellington. He is greatly missed.

Barry was in our Quitaque class before moving to Wellington for his high school years. He stayed in touch with us & even attended our 50th year Class Reunion in 2019. He continued to re-visit Quitaque & even made it to our QHS get-together six months ago. Jamie & Dickie - Thanks for being there for Barry and sorry for your loss. I can't go to Wellington Saturday, but will be thinking of Barry (and you).
