Ben Scott Riskey, age 77, of Thompsonville, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Thompsonville on December 15, 2025. He was born on August 24, 1948, in
Traverse City, Michigan, the beloved son of Virginia "Jinny" Riskey and the late Millard Riskey.
Ben was a devoted father, grandfather, and loyal friend whose quiet wisdom, curiosity, and craftsmanship left a lasting mark on all who knew him. He is survived by his children, Amanda (Sam) Riskey-Goodrich and Anthony (Rachel) Riskey, and their mother, Janet Riskey. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Theryn and Verse Goodrich, and Josh, Natalie, Elijah, and Oliver Hekman, each of whom brought him great joy.
He is also survived by his sisters, Shelly (John) Osborne and Lynn (Mark) Hobzek; his four nieces; and many cherished friends, including Sandy (the late Max) Bromely, Jim (Sarah) Harris, Sally (the late Dave) Downer, along with numerous extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Ben found his greatest happiness outdoors. A lifelong learner, he was always teaching himself new skills and studying the habits of the wildlife around him-observing birds and ducks, befriending local crows, and even trapping the occasional stinky skunk. As a devoted father, he shared these passions generously with his children, taking them canoeing on the river, fishing, boating on Duck and Long Lakes, hunting, banding birds with his German Shorthaired Pointers, morel mushroom picking, and even beaver trapping. These experiences created memories that will be treasured forever.
Ben also possessed a deep appreciation for architecture and design. Through his company, Seabrook Construction, he spent much of his life designing and building residential and commercial structures throughout Traverse City and the surrounding areas. Later, he embraced the pure artistry of woodworking through his business, Wacky Woodworks, where he used hand-selected exotic woods to craft breathtaking mugs, tankards, and countless other unique pieces. His imagination knew no bounds-loons, wall sconces, bowls, mugs, cutting boards, chess boards, ornaments, pizza cutters, and more flowed from his hands. Nearly every family member proudly treasures a custom piece made by Ben.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Millard Riskey, and his brothers, Von and Mark Riskey.
In accordance with Ben's wishes, a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
