Benjamin Henry Barela, age 87, born to eternal life November 16, 2024.
Preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mary Kathleen (née Kenyon), grandson George, brothers Joseph, Earnest, Richard and sister Mary. Beloved father to Elizabeth (Michael) Steinike, Mary (Daniel) Freeman and Dianne (David) Budd-Kriegel. Amazing grandfather to Erik, Justin, Lindsey, Benjamin, Samantha, Elizabeth, Sylvia, Rachel and Henry and great grandchildren Sophia, Matalyn and Wyatt. Further survived by his brother Raymond, sister Faith and many other loving relatives and friends.
Born to Joseph and Eulalia Barela in Santa Fe, New Mexico on August 10, 1937. Ben often reminisced about his wonderful childhood and the countless adventures he had with his six siblings and friends. One memory was shared about him and a friend who had both stayed out too late. Afraid of the dark, they decided to shout back and forth to each other, ensuring they heard one another until each arrived safely at home. This continued for several blocks, their voices echoing throughout the night for the entire neighborhood to hear. When Ben wasn't playing, he could be found selling newspapers on the street corner in town or helping his mother with household chores.
Ben's mother held a very special place in his heart. He frequently spoke of her sacrifices and commitments to the family. The most valuable gift she gave was a profound love for God and the church. Christ was the center of their lives and Ben carried that love of faith with him throughout his life sharing it with everyone, friends and strangers alike.
After graduating from high school, Ben enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, which marked his first time leaving home and seeing the world. He was stationed in Alaska, Guam, and eventually Tucson, Arizona where he met his beautiful wife, Mary Kathleen Kenyon, at a young adult church gathering. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Ben returned to Santa Fe. He kept in touch with Kathy and before long; he went back to Tucson to date her. They were married on July 1st, 1961 and had three beautiful daughters together. Ben passed the same love for Christ to his daughters that his mother passed to him. When they were younger a trusted guardian angel would tell Ben when his daughters were lying-something that never failed to amaze them until they grew a little older and a little wiser.
Ben was a devoted husband and exceptional father and worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He began his career as a truck driver for Pacific Drug Distribution and steadily ascended the corporate ladder through years of dedication and hard work. He became a top salesman with Amfac and his success continued as he was promoted to manager of the Phoenix wholesale house, followed by a transfer to manage the Tucson location. Under his leadership sales soared and he was frequently named Manager of the Year in the Amfac division.
Ben's impressive professional achievements stemmed from his commitment to helping others. Many peers have shared stories of Ben's exceptional care and attention to detail. One pharmacist, who had recently transferred to a new hospital, shared such a story. This new hospital's supplier could not deliver a crucial medication, needed for a terminally ill cancer patient, until the next morning. At 1am Ben's phone rang and without hesitation he got into his car, drove to the warehouse, picked up the medication, and personally delivered it to the hospital. This striking act of kindness saved a life, led the hospital to make Amfac their official supplier and truly embodied the compassion and can-do attitude Ben possessed.
Ben was asked more than once to transfer to struggling warehouses but often declined, choosing to stay close to his family. However, when Amfac was acquired by Bindley Western, Ben was again offered a regional manager position in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After much prayer and consideration, he and Kathy decided to accept the opportunity. They settled in Cedarburg, where Kathy quickly fell in love with the town and where they continued a legacy of love and generosity together for over 35 more years.
Ben never forgot his roots in Santa Fe. For many years he prioritized visits to spend time with his brothers, sisters, aunts, nieces, and nephews who remained there. His favorite time to return was during The Fiestas when celebrations were in full swing. He loved singing karaoke and loved a good party! Every moment spent in Santa Fe was incredibly special to him-it was his first love, a place he always held close to his heart.
Ben was heavily involved in St. Francis Borgia Church North where he generously volunteered his time and talents to help those in need. Many came to know Ben from his quiet moments during Eucharistic Adoration or through his service with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He also found great joy in working with the Knights of Columbus and often visited Lasata to brighten the days of those there, always seeking ways to lift others' spirits.
After Kathy's passing, Ben remained in their Cedarburg home for 10 more years before joining her in heaven.
Ben was a truly special and remarkable man. He will forever remain in the hearts of those he left behind and all who were fortunate enough to know him will miss him dearly.
Visitation for Ben will be held Friday, December 6, 2024, from 2:30pm until time of the memorial Mass at 4:00pm. Both will take place at St. Francis Borgia North Church. 1375 Covered Bridge Road, Cedarburg WI, 53012.
