Benjamin (Ben) Elexy Edge, III of Central, SC passed peacefully on April 22, 2023, after an extended illness.
Born November 25, 1956, he was the son of the late Benjamin Elexy Edge, Jr. and Jean Johnson Edge.
Ben was a graduate of North Myrtle Beach High where he was Valedictorian, he received his bachelor's degree in Agricultural Education from Clemson University, graduating with Highest Honors. He remained at Clemson University where he received his master's degree in Agronomy. Immediately after, he attended Purdue University where he obtained a PhD in Plant Breeding.
Ben was a natural born teacher. He was hired as the Head of Pioneer Wheat Breeding Station in St. Matthews, SC and was later the Head of Clemson University's Small Grain Breeding Program. He ended his career teaching at Tri-County Technical College.
He was described by friends and family as being a mentor, kindhearted, helpful to others, approachable and intelligent. Some of his most coveted achievements were serving as State FFA officer, getting married, having two sons, and developing patented wheat breeds for Pioneer Seed.
Ben served as the unofficial photographer at church, however photography wasn't his only passion. He also enjoyed traveling, kayaking, Sci-Fi, reading and watching old westerns. He made a game out of identifying plants, plant diseases and insects.
He is survived by Anita Stoecker Edge; his two sons, Matthew E. Edge, and Kyle B. Edge; his brother, Christopher D. Edge and his sister, Stephanie Edge Wise. Ben was preceded in death by his brother, Stuart N. Edge.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at University Lutheran Church at 111 Sloan St. Clemson, SC. The visitation will begin at 12:15 p.m. Sunday prior to the service. The service will be available to watch on Facebook Live: https://www.Facebook.com/uniluclemson/ for those who cannot attend.
