Don Matthews Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sullivan-King Mortuary & Crematory - Anderson on Jan. 31, 2026.
James Donald Matthews, 79, of Liberty, SC, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, passing away peacefully in his home Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Born in Greenville, SC, he was the son of the late James Elbert Matthews, Jr. and Edna Faye Thurston Matthews. Don was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from Robert Bosch and had previously worked for Greenville General Hospital as Assistant Director of Security. Don was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and companion – all roles he truly cherished. Family was always the most important thing to him in life. He was known to be a beloved storyteller, jokester, master tinkerer and amateur astronomer. His hobbies also included scuba diving and motorcycles. Later in life, enjoyment was found spending time in his shop working on cars and equipment. When not tinkering or studying an owner's manual, you would find him relaxing on his front porch with a cup of coffee, listening to news and music or visiting with any friends and family who stopped by to see him. He truly loved the simple life.

Survivors include his best friend and love of his life, Sandra Bleckley; son Todd Matthews (fiancé Heather Owens); daughter Aimee Matthews Hill (Lee); grandchildren Sydney Matthews Lambright and Lem Hill; great-grandchildren Weston Lambright, Payton Lambright, and Cooper Lambright; stepson Marty Bleckley (Susan); stepdaughter Jessica Bolden (Chris); step grandchildren Hunter Bolden, Hannah King (Dylan), and Haleigh Saxon (Justin); brothers Tommy Matthews (Linda), Jerry Matthews (Pam) and Vincent Matthews; and sisters Darlene Griffith (Jimmy), Janice Cothran, Peggy Bramlett, and Jackie Dobson.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, February 12, at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel. Burial, with military honors, will follow at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 11, at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 151 Central in Norris, S.C.
