Benjamin Paul Grier was born March 24, 1987 and passed on September 14, 2023. He "came out" with a smile and kept it for life. He had spina bifida, which gave him paralysis from the knees down. He had many medical issues over his lifetime and he faced them head on. He had just celebrated his 19th anniversary of his leukemia diagnosis and would have celebrated 16 years of being a cancer survivor in December.
In high school, Benj loved playing wheelchair basketball and was a wicked 3-point shooter. He played on the Youth Team at The Center for Individuals with Physical Challenges and we all attended many tournaments around the country. He absolutely loved it!
Benj loved his brothers and was always up for a challenge and was right there when an idea was proposed. In recent years he enjoyed playing Dungeons & Dragons and Warhammer with friends. He was starting to learn how to paint the characters with the plan that his Dad would print them on his 3-D printer, and then Benj would paint them so they could be sold to other players.
Benj loved to travel and always wanted to get in the car and just head west. He made it to the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Colorado, and Washington D.C. He thought the trip to the Grand Canyon was the greatest one he'd ever taken until he went skiing in Colorado with a group that specialized in handicapped skiing.
Benj is survived by his father, Jim; his mother, Paula; his brothers, Christopher and Samuel; and his beloved nephews, Rylan and Joe. He was preceded into death by his brother, Jonathon in 1989. He had an incredible affinity with children, always giving them his full attention. "Uncle Benj" loved nothing more than spending time with Rylan and Joe, building cardboard forts, playing games and staging epic Nerf War games at Grammy's house.
Donations in Benjamin's name can be sent to The Center for Individuals with Physical Challenges, 815 S. Utica Ave., Tulsa, OK 74104.
Benjamin's service will be at 1:00pm on Wednesday, September 27 at New Life Baptist church, 851 West Norman Street in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma with interment in Mt. Muncie Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS.

I feel bad that I am just now seeing the news of Ben's death, months after the fact. Ben was a camper in my cabin at Camp Barnabas back in 2003. It was such a pleasure getting to know him. He was full of spunk and dry wit. A heroic, courageous individual. Very glad to have had the chance to get to know him.
