Benjamin Evan Illum, age 44, of San Diego, California, passed away on February 2, 2025. Born on August 5, 1980, in Brockport, New York, he was the fourth child of Steven and Eileen Illum.
Ben was known for his intellectual curiosity and ambition, traits that defined him from a young age. A man of many talents, he was a top student, an Eagle Scout, and an avid outdoors enthusiast, enjoying hiking, skiing, and cycling throughout his life.
After a two-year service mission in Quito, Ecuador, for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (1999-2001), Ben earned a bachelor's degree in microbiology from Brigham Young University in 2007. He continued his education at the University of Utah, where he studied medicine from 2008 to 2012, excelling in his studies and residency in anesthesia at UCSD.
Ben was deeply committed to his medical career, further specializing in Anesthesia Critical Care and later in Neuro-Critical Care. Known for his compassion and dedication, Ben touched the lives of many patients and families, especially during the challenging early days of the pandemic.
In addition to being a triple board-certified physician, Ben obtained his real estate license, and was a law student at the University of San Diego. He was also on the advisory board of Interface Kids, where he assisted in providing essential surgeries to children in need.
Ben's life was enriched by his relationships, including his beloved dog Roxy and his girlfriend Stephanie. His vibrant personality and generous spirit made him a central figure in his community and family.
Ben is survived by his mother, Eileen and siblings Thann, Maren, Jon, Nate, and Justin.
A celebration of life will be held on February 15, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the home of his friend and colleague, Becky Dodd. A Zoom link will be available for those unable to attend in person. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Interface Kids. Contributions of meaningful photos and Ben's favorite music for a remembrance playlist are welcomed.
